Just bought my first gun: a Steyr M9.

Of course, WI has a 48-hour waiting period before I can pick it up (and thank God for that, because who knows what I might do with it between now and then! I just don't know what might happen if my state didn't make its law-abiding citizens take the time to Think About What They've Done...feh), and I've already got plans for Friday night, so it won't get out to a range before Saturday.

I'm more excited than I can conveniently express. It was interesting, though - when the guy disappeared to the back for twenty minutes to do the NICS check, I had the same sort of formless tension you get when a squad car is following you, whether or not you're doing anything wrong. Anyway, thanks to everyone here who took the time to answer my newbie questions in the run-up to this purchase.

Now, to begin looking for an inexpensive bolt-action .30-06...

I know the feeling waiting for the NICS. I can't decide which is worse -- having someone disappear in the back and wondering what's taking so long, or having the person right there and hearing half the conversation, i.e., yes, yes, uh-huh, laughs.... (what's funny, is it me or something else....)

I have witnessed someone getting arrested after the NICS check. I didn't know the whole story, but I recall seeing two peace officers coming in and arresting the guy, asking if he had any weapons. It seemed pretty funny considering the cases and walls were filled with weapons...

I thought the worst NICS checks I went through was the first time my FFL was a personal friend. Was hoping like heck that nothing was wrong, more because I didn't want to be embarrassed than anything else.

Congratulations, you just bought a great gun that is a great deal and is a great deal of fun to shoot! Just wait until we get some hi-cap for it :)

If you need info on it go to the Steyr section of glocktalk.com

Mr. Mysterious - thanks for the pointer, I've just started skimming the surface, and I've already picked up some good info.

So now, having bought one, I've spent my whole evening cruising around the web looking for information on it (almost all of it has been encouraging, which helps alleviate any buyers' remorse I might have had)...this whole 48-hour waiting period thing is really a PITA.

*grumble*

The first gun I ever bought was a Steyr M9. I bought it about two years ago and it is still plugging along as strong as the day I got it.

If you are interested in getting a rifle chambered in 30.06, you really, really, REALLY, should get a service grade Garand from CMP. I bought my Garand from the CMP because I was there with a friend and the Garand has turned into the finest shooter I own. The only reason you should pass up getting a Garand is if you save up and buy and AUG.

Control,

Got my M9 last month and am quite pleased. It was only my second piece (first was a Buck Mark). Speaking of which, not sure if you have any experience shooting 22lr. If not, then I highly recommend getting some. It provides very cost-effective practice while one learns the basics of shooting. The ~$200-250 initial cost will pay itself off very quickly in ammo savings, IMHO. I'd reccommend the usual suspects: Buck Mark, Ruger MKII, Ruger 22/45 and other known rimfire pieces. Speaking of which, I need to get a 22lr revolver soon. :D

Good shooting!

My first was also an M40 ... got it back in ought-one.

Good pistols ... nicer trigger then a Glock and my S40 is just about the perfect all around carry pistol.

If you want a BOLT-action .30-06 I'll put in a plug for a Remington 700. I bought a Remington 700 ADL in .308 about three years ago now for deer hunting. I've been nothing but pleased with it since.
