Steyr Mauser in .308

Two questions about a Steyr made Mauser in .308 caliber. Picture attached...

1. Modelo 1912-61 means it was made in 1912 and converted in 1961 to Nato .308? (the "-61" is stamped differently than "1912")

2. How does the height adjustment work? For example; 3=300, 4=400 yards?

3. The barrel is stamped .308 cal

1. Yes, sorta. Contract was 1912. I think most were made around 1913-1914 or so. Yes, converted to 7.62 NATO in 1961.

2. Yes, sorta. 300 is meters, not yards.

Get a Mojo sight instead (you can always revert) and shoot with NATO ammo. I really like these guns. Well made, good feel, very solid, very simple. Good platforms for pseudo-scouts or utility rifles as collector values is moderate at best.

How can I mount a scope without having the receiver drillled and tapped?

You can use the temporary BSquare mount that replaces the rear sight leaf to test out the forward mounted scope. I've not tried this, but I've heard that it's not extremely stable (obvious if you look at it).

The other option is permanent, using an XS Ching Ring (or BEAST if he still makes them) in place of the (removed) rear sight base.

One other thing that some have done is to use a T/C base on the bbl. (again, after removal of the rear sight base), but I'd be REAL careful drilling/tapping that area.

The other options are all standard over the action.
