Scout Rifle, what do ya think?

How about it folks, what do you think of the concept.
I'm in the process of putting one together. Found a
Austrian Steyr 1912-61, a "98" . In .308 with a 17 1/4
inch barrel. Classic military Mauser 98, stock,
bent bolt handle, 2000 meter rear sight, so forth, so on.
And of course it takes stripper clips as well, it fits the
concept.

Next is the scope question. Of course the Leupold Scout
Scope will cost more than the rifle! Any one know of
another Scout Scope that might be a little cheaper?

Oh yeah, it shoots rather well right now with ball. Also seems to like 180 gr. loads as well.

Burris makes 1x and 2.75x Scout scopes.

Not sure about the price on the 1x but BearBasin.com has the 2.75x scope for $200.

i haven't tried the Burris scope, but the Leupold is a GREAT piece of glass! the eye relief and exit pupil is wonderful. i got mine for $215 or $225 from swfa.com

if you want to mount the scope on a Mauser... you can remove the rear sight base and mount a Weaver #92A base for a Thompson/Center Contender directly to the barrel... costs about $7 for the base.

Gentelman, thank you very much for the information.
One of the things I find entertaining about this is prices.
I live a 45 minute drive from Leupold, they don't retail
from the factory. The local boy sells that Scout for
$276.00. Hell, go out of state. Thanks again !

You can also use a pistol scope. Start around $50.

I guess that I've always considered the concept seriously flawed. Just MHO!

But if you like it, then by all means go for it. I'd get a Leupold scope though. You get what you pay for.

I've owned one of the Leupold Scout scopes. I would definitely recommend spending some extra cash on the glass. Instead of looking at it in terms of the cost relative to the rifle, realize that you are putting the scope on a sweet Austrian classic of a rifle.

The Leupold scout scope isn't that expensive, in fact I wish they made a more expensive version. The Leupold Scout scope doesn't use their Muti-Coat 4, nor does it use a "click" adjustment system, rather it uses a friction adjustment system.

It's also a half an ounce lighter than the Burris scope.

The hard part about non-factory scouts is that they tend to fail the weight limit.

NEVER scrimp on optics. The Leupold is the way to go. Sounds like you've got a great platform there. Let us know how it shapes up.
