i just bought a Steyr M-A1 40 S&W pistol and haven't really found alot on the internet about it, it was the choice between a brand new Steyr or a used XD 45, just wondering if anybody has any input on the Steyr and if i made a good choice or not!!!

A little late for input isn't it? I have no experience with Steyr at all I hear good things about them though especially their rifles. The XD I own, and I love it and am sure many people have the same feeling.

Steyr make some seriously stout polymer-framed handguns. My M40 looks to have been overbuilt for the caliber and they do indeed feature both a supported chamber and the barrel is not polygonal rifled (so feel free to use lead bullets). I had planned on handloading some 180gr or 200gr hardcast somewhere in the realm of Double Tap fodder when I originally puchased my M40 for use on the trail and found these traits useful.

XDs have a sterling reputation to my knowledge, so I don't think you could have gone wrong either way as far as function, strength or longevity.

However, you'll find it far easier to find accessories for the XD as Steyr appears to have issues maintaining a distributor in the States.

I had Steyr M-A1 40, but sold it to a firend of mine. I bought it to use as a 357sig platform, but had difficulty obtaining the barrel. I later purchased Sig P229 in 40 cal and added a 357 barrel to it. Having P99 in the same caliber and liking it more, I found Steyr redundant and sold it.

In my opinion, Steyr is a good value for the money. Triangular sites were a selling point for me. The gun was a fun range toy and all of my friends were pleased with it as well. The only problem I had is diffucuty racking a slide with full magazine: sometimes it would chamber the round, but on many occasions it was difficult and sometimes impossible with both magazines I had for it. For this reason, I kept magazines loaded with 10 rather than 12 rounds.

I do have XD-45 and find it to be a good practical gun.

I love mine!

No real downside to the one I own. The sights are different but with a little practice they work well. More then happy to rely on it for a ccw gun.

steyr m- A1

I have enjoyed all of the glock calibers, in various models, I still have 3 Glocks, I have a Steyr A1 in 40 S&W. Comparing the two: Both are ugly, but pretty is as pretty does. The Stey has a fully supported chamber, metal sights, will shoot lead bullets has a better trigger than the Glocks, fits my hand much better than the Glock and is just as reliable, am just as accurate. The Glock doesn't have anything better than the Steyr. ;)

yeah, the Steyrs are great - I own two (S9 and M357) and love to shoot/carry them both. Extremely dependable, well made. Shame that more people don't know them here in the US.

Steyr's huh?

I currently own four Steyr 9mm pistols, First, the oldest, Is a 1917 dated Steyr-Hahn converted by Mauser in 1938-39 to shoot the 9 X 19 round and then re-issued to the Nazi-controled Austrian police.

The second is an early '80s Steyr GB 18 that shoots well and quite accurately, but can be a bit much to keep the gas system clean. It holds 18 rounds in the mag...the design was offered to the Austrian Army for service consideration... the same tests that saw the totally unknown Glock 17 adopted as their service pistol.

The remainder of my 9mm Steyrs consists of a full-size Steyr Model M and the compact (and HARD to find) Model S. Polymer framed, shoot well if you can adjust to the triangular sights and quite reliable.

Like my Steyrs!
