I'm thinking about purchasing a Steyr MA-1 in 9MM, in addition to the Taurus Millenium pro I'll be buying on Saturday. Does anyone have any experience with Steyrs, or any experience in dealing with the company?

i own the older S9's. there is a forum for steyr's that could probably answer any of your questions better.

Ditto.

I have an original M40, and the only malfunction I have had in 2000 rounds or so is a stovepipe (when my wife shot it for the first time). It is my primary carry gun.

The grip angle and sights can be a little weird at first, but shot it and they will grow on you fast. My room mate from college had one of the older M-series and he loved it. Unfortunately he was in a cash crunch and it was either the steyr or the kimber. So he sold the steyr to his uncle with the understanding that he could buy it back again. The only people that I have seen that don't like this gun after firing it are the types who dislike any polymer pistol.

So go for it, even if you don't like it they have a good resale value.

I have owned 2 Steyrs. S9 and an S40. I sold both. Loved the guns. Felt great in the hand. Very accurate for a compact pistol.

That is where the love affair ended. I had frame damage on my S40 from high pressure factory loaded 40 S&W rounds really messed up the internals of the frame. 7 months land about 20 phone calls later I got a replacement pistol. Not 3 days after I got my S40 back they were sactioned by the US goverment.

At that point I decieded that an unsupported pistol is not worth it no matter how much I liked it. So I sold both of them and moved on. When CDNN was selling them for $300 they were a steal. If you are paying anything over $400 I would get a Glock 19.

I have a Steyr S40....

and wife has a S9. They are the finest pistols I have ever owned. Zero malfunctions since I got them 18 months ago. Wish hicap mags were available that did not cost an arm and a leg......chris3

Parts

I heard Steyr has been sanctioned by the US for selling sniper rifles to Iran. Steyr cannot sell parts/firearms in the US anymore. PJ's who sells AUG parts is almost out and cannot import any more. Parts and repairs in the future may be hard to come by. Too bad. :(

Not quite right.

Our government didn't allow Steyr to sell their .50BMG rifles to American Citizens so they had to sell them somewhere ... they sold them to Iran (not a good place to sell them I agree).

As a result, our government decided to punish Steyr for its own duplicity by not allowing any US government agency to deal with Steyr.

They can still be imported into the US, and their parts can still be imported into the US, however no government agency can do business with Steyr.

Same thing was done to Toshiba back in the 80s IIRC because they sold some technology to the Soviets.

So all that really means is that you won't see our military with Steyr rifles and you won't see any law enforcement agencies issue their pistols.

Steyr parts

Thanks for the clarification! Wonder why PJ is so bummed out? He told me he could not get anymore AUG/USR parts.
