I'm looking for a soft-shooting all-around 9mm. Basically a range gun that may do HD duty.

FWIW I'm cross-shopping the Beretta PX4, Sig Pro 2022, and Glock 19. :uhoh:

The Steyr sells for about $470 + tax.

Is it worth a look for an all-around 9mm?

How's the Steyr as far as muzzle flip? (I was surprised by my Walther P99C's amount of snap).

How about accuracy & reliability? How durable is the finish and how easy are Steyrs to strip?

What else should I know about Steyr's M9.

I have the older M40 with a 357 Sig drop in barrel. Due to the design it has very little muzzle flip and low recoil with the 40/357, so the M9 should be a peice of cake. They have a short trigger reset and a very clean break very much like a single action. I have had no malfunctions in about 5 yrs, very accurate, and flip the take down lever and slide the slide off.

I traded my Taurus 24/7 a few days ago for an almost brand new Steyr M9-A1 and I have been to the range twice so far. I love the M9.:D It does not have alot of muzzle flip (for me) and the sights are different, but work great for me. I have put about 400 rounds of various brands of 9mm ammo with no hickups at all. I find the M9 to be quite accurate. I paid $450 for the M9 and it came with 2 10-round mags. I am not big into large capacity mags anyways. If you get it, post a range report and let us know how you like it. Gotta change my sig once again!!:D :D
Oh yeah, takedown is a breeze also.

I own an older-style Steyr M9, and a Glock 23 that I also shoot with a 9mm conversion barrel - I'd say there's little if any difference between the two guns in terms of recoil, muzzle flip, or accuracy. One caveat is the triangle/trapezoid sights and manual safety on the Steyr - they're unique to the brand, and don't support "cross-training" with any other brand of pistol.

For a home-defense/range gun in 9mm, I'd suggest you consider a Springfield XD - I've been very pleased with my previously-owned 5" Tactical model, and have shot well with it in IDPA competition.

My wife has a M9 and a S9......

both are terrific trouble free pistols. Love the sights.......chris3

The Steyr pistols are on my shortlist for possible CHL handguns for my wife once we'll in TX. I've shot the M9 before and I liked it.

I'm also VERY impressed with the PX-4 (which came as a bit of a surprise consideringmy tepid feelings for the 92).

I've had an S9 for a while and it's a great gun, well made, reliable, accurate and the sites work well. As an old fart I like having a real safety.

On the other hand for CCW purposes it's awfully thick, at least to me. I normally carry a Hipower and sometimes a Kahr, so maybe I'm spoiled on thin guns, but while I love the Steyr it never makes it into the CCW rotation due to its bulk.

I saw one in the rental case at the range tonight & shot it....one word...NICE!! Soft shooting, extremely straight shooting, really nice accuracy and the trigger was, short, crisp & smooth! Unfortuneately, I'm considering another 9mm pistol :scrutiny:

steyr

They did not become that popular due to one thing. High dollar marketing.

I think they are one of the best values out there.

Nice pistol.
