Does anyone own or has anyone fired the Steyr MA-1 pistol? I was wondering what peoples opinions of it were. How does it rate compared to other polymer guns?

I'm curious as well. IIRC, the first Steyr polymer pistol had some sort of design flaw that looked like after some wear could become dangerous. Can't remember exactly what it was, but one member documented it pretty well. I was wondering if the new pistol had this corrected.

I have a M40 that has been excellent. The bore axis is higher than a Glock so felt recoil is less. The trapezoidal sights are the best available for close range work.

The Steyr never had a design flaw despite some bad internet information. The sear contact area on the Steyr is about 5x that of a 1911 and you'd have to wear the rails half off to cause a problem.

That's a good link lycan. Thank you. I am really considering buying one now. My only concern would be the ftf problems mentioned. Of course, there was only one mention of ftf.

I am curious, is $350.00 the usual going price for the MA-1? That is pretty cheap if it's true.

CDNN had the 9mm models for $299 a while back that's over. Now they go about $400.

FTF was caused by an overlytight extractor on some models and the fix is located under tips and tweaks at Steyr club. Mine feeds empty casings after I smoothed the feed ramp and the fully supported chamber is a great feature for th .40's.

Steyr along with Glock are the best combat pistols on the planet, and yes they are better combat pistols than Sig and HK.

Over the last month, I have rented a brand new (at least when I first started renting the pistol) M-A1 9mm and have really enjoyed it...Nice (I mean really nice) trigger, above average ergos and surprisingly good accuracy...My only complaint was in the stock trapazoidal (sp?) sights :barf:
I've put over 500 rounds through this range gun and it just keeps on going as well as it did when the two of use were introduced ;)
Good Luck!

Keep in mind that the MA-1 is a newer version of the older M series. I've seen the M series in the $300 price range but not the MA-1. At the local funshop the MA-1 is $449.

I used to have two of the older guns. A M-40 which was 98% reliable and a M-357 which was 100% reliable.

One of the local IDPA shooters around here uses a M9A-1 and does quite well with it. His only complaint is the trapezoidal sights on longer targets.

I'd like to pick up one, but aftermarket support is lacking and last I looked mags were scarce and exspensive. I wonder what warranty support is like.

Steyr has opened their own service center, instead of using distrubitors. CDNN has low caps for less than $10 and high caps for $29.95.
