sticky firing pin pin

Can someone tell me why they use a cotter pin for a firing pin retaining pin on an AR-15? The split tends to get wider and they're really difficult to push through the holes. You'd think on a modern firearm with all its attendant technology they'd come up with something a little more high tech than something you'd use to secure a wheel on a lawn cart.
