I am looking for a gunsmithing book or any resource that teaches you how to fit a shotgun stock.. I just had my Browning o/u fitted with a Kickeez pad. I think the stocksmith made the stock about an inch longer. This made a great big difference! It don't hit my cheek and I shoot much better with the gun now. I want to learn how to fit gunstocks. I have 4 field grade shotguns that have the plastic recoil pad on it. I would like to fit Kickeez's on all of them. Problem is, these guns are not worth the cost he charged me. I would sure like to take a shot at doing it myself. Any info is appreciated....

Orvis has something on fitting in one of their upland hunting books, but they seem to think fitting can only be done by someone with a British accent and at great cost. They do have an explanation of how to measure the various dimensions and what can be tried to improve fit for comfort and effect.

Try the Bruce Buck method instead. Use moleskin, tape, cardboard to add length, height or whatever to a stock until the thing fits like your favorite jeans and hits the targets right in the middle. Take the whole thing to a good smith and have him duplicate it in pretty wood.

As a start, try measuring the distance from the center of the trigger to the center of the pad on the one that's been fitted.Add spacers to your other stocks until they match.

HTH....

Gunfitting, published by Safari Press. I believe it is out of print. I think the author was Yardley.

Yep, Gunfitting: The Quest for Perfection by Michael Yardley.
You may have a hard time buying it in the US, buying in the UK
and having it shipped here is easy, but there is a cost.
Try amazon.co.uk there are a couple of used and new ones.

The proper method of fitting a shotgun stock is to use a 'try gun' .This is a shotgun with a stock that has all the dimensions adjustable. That along with an experienced coach will give you the dimensions that will fit you. From there you get a stock made with those dimensions. Otherwise you will have to stick with just a few things that you can change, such as LOP and height of comb.

I wanted my Trap 870 to fit better so I ordered an Wenig New American (look under "styles") and after a lot of planning, filing and sanding I had a much better 870 stock for shooting Trap. The New American has a high offset comb, an asymmetrical grip and it toes out at the shoulder. It feels great. I shot it a few times without a recoil pad and due to the comfort and the significant improvement in my shooting (right there with the O/U), I decided the LOP was right; then I had a local shotgun smith add a Pachmyer recoil pad. He agreed that the LOP was correct, so he removed wood the thickness of the pad and then installed the pad. Perfect fit.
