I am looking to replace the stock on my Post-64 Winchester Model 70 7mm Mag. I am considering a Hogue overmolded stock but have zero experience with it, and frankly need some pointers to make sure I get a stock that will fit.

On a side note, can this rifle be fitted with a detachable box magazine? I know they're out there and require a different floor plate but that's all I know.

Thanks

When FN started production in 2008 they used different bottom metal than the guns made from 1964-2006. Almost all of the aftermarket options are made for new guns. You can buy a new floor plate and trigger guard to use with the new stock for $75-$100. I'm not a fan of the Hogue. For just over $260 you can get a B&C Medalist.

Personally I really like McMillan better, but not everyone wants to spend $500-$600 on a stock. The Medalist is much better than a Hogue, and not that much more expensive.

It is also possible to buy an adapter for about $10. I think I have an adapter around here I'd give you if you decide to go that route. I've also just used a couple of flat washers to make the bottom metal line up in the past.

Old bottom metal in foreground, new in the back. Because the new metal is thicker the cutout in the stock is deeper. You can use 2 flat washers between bottom metal and stock, or use the plastic adapter.

You will still have a small gap around the floor plate near the trigger guard. But it is cosmetic and does not affect function. I used this rifle for a couple of years, first with washers, then the adapter, before spending the money for new bottom metal. It doesn't look perfect, but functions.

Interesting...

Just for context my rifle was done before 2000 (90's I think). I believe it's a sporter long action.

I like the Bell and Carlson stock. I am looking for a scope for the rifle now, probably going to be a Leupold 4.5-14x40. The only money I have to sink into the project is what I got for the sale of another optic. Most of that will be eaten up by the new scope with maybe 200 left for a new stock.

I can probably dig some things up to sell but a McMillan is way out of reach unfortunately.

I'm planning on putting the OD green B&C on my Ultimate Shadow SS this summer. There is a place called Red Hawk rifles, or something along those lines that sells those stocks for $249. I think the stock on the Extreme Weather I had was a B&C, and that rifle fit me well and had a good feel to it.

I have a post'64 (push feed) M70 in .30/06 - mine was made in the mid '70s. It's wearing a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9 'scope in a Redfield JR mount.

I put it into a Bell & Carlson stock 'way back in the late '80s and have been very satisfied - once I fitted it properly.

It turns out the fit was not perfectly "drop in" . . . I found one of the reinforcing ribs in the forend was a little too high and touched the barrel, and the recoil lug on the action didn't bear evenly on the recoil shoulder in the stock, causing some horizontal group dispersion. Glass bedding the action, the bottom and sides of the tang, the recoil lug, and the first 2" of barrel made the rifle a reliable sub-MOA performer - not bad for a stock that cost me $90 at the time.

This was the FIRST rifle I ever glass bedded - so it's not something that takes a professional.

I've hunted with that rifle from Minnesota to Africa, and am well satisfied - zero doesn't wander, it fits me well, and has been totally reliable for decades with only normal maintenance.

Hmm - I was a bit worried that changing the stock would be a PITA as far as fitting it properly. I think that end of the project will have to wait until I'm done with school and can focus on it a lot more. Hopefully I will be able to set it up before next deer season.
