the elections gotten me thinking
i have one of two options
A. stock up a huge amount of ammo and spare parts for my ar 15 in .223
or
B. buy a rifle in .308 and stock up a good amount in both calibers of .223 and .308
ive already started on my .45 ammo and a variety of shotgun shells
im sure many others have had this question
also if i should buy a rifle in .308/7.62 which rifle should i buy
ive been looking at the m1a lately and obviously the ak
but i want something for medium to long range

It depends on what you plan to do. If TSHTF is your main concern then I would just stock up on what you have. If you are interested in other things then the specifics would determine the suggestions. I happen to like lever guns, and bolt actions just as much as semis so a BLR in .308 or a nice bolt gun and a couple thousand rounds sounds real good to me. But again your plans would determine what direction you should go.

ammo cannot be stressed enough here; you know that Ob wan will do as many exec orders as he can possibly get away with, and that includes foreign importation. That includes all foreign made ammo, both new and milsurp.
Your goal should be to get 10k of all rounds you fire. and that is just for your stock.

It depends on what you plan to do.
Agreed.

Stockpiling firearms and ammunition without any clear purpose in mind is simply a waste of money. You need to spend some time defining your mission.

well the idea is to have all the general areas covered
i have a shotgun( mossberg 500), handgun(sig 1911), and rifle (rra ar15)
but i feel that i need a rifle in a larger caliber
with the 7.62 round being one of the most available rounds in the world i think it would be good to have a rifle in 7.62
i would prefer a rifle that is american made so that kinda rules out the AK
and since the ar15 serves as a close combat rifle i was thinking mybe i should get a rifle for longer ranges than i normally would with the ar15
as far as the purpose its kinda hard to tell because no one can really say what is come
i just want to have my bases covered now before someone tell me i cant

i have to disagree with some of the opinions of stocking up without any purpose or direction is sensless. in my humble opinion it is smart to buy anything and everything you can afford. in my collecting experience you really cant go wrong buying anything gun related except for foo foo accesories. i have managed to accumulate 12,000+ rounds of ammunition and am getting really close to 100 firearms and i really havnt seen a decline in anything that ive bought. the prices of weapons/ammunition in the past 10 years has been on the upswing, i just sold off an AR upper that i had paid $350 for about 5 years ago for $525 just last month. im sitting on 7000 rounds of 7.62X39 that i paid $65 for spam cans of 600. again i must reiterate buy all you can afford and anything - it really doesnt matter.

Sidebar - I was too depressed to grab a newspaper - can anyone tell me:

Did the D party, or did they not, end up acquiring a filibuster-proof majority of 60 in the US Senate?

Edit: Nevermind; looks like they did not; only got 57; whew!!!

What's with the SHTF? If it is zombies then ok, if Aliens invading then ok as well. If it is you know who, forget it, you will be outgunned and out manouvered, look for a deep hole and stay there! All this talk about SHTF is really ridiculous. What are Americans really willing to do? Under what scenarios are we willing to pull the trigger and take someone else's life? I think the Government will call it vigilantism and go after all the people out there who have decided to take matters into their own hands. For example, Katrina and the looting that took place in New Orleans, LA. What was the local government's response - they confiscated weapons from law abiding citizens - they did not protect them and they don't expect you to protect yourself while they get their act together for a response. You can stockpile tons of ammo and a hundred firearms and all the government has to do is surround your house, shut off the electricity and water, and all these survivalist heroes will crap themselves. Why? We have been brought up to respect law enforcement and the American Government! So be realistic buy some ammo and some guns and enjoy them while you can - until they get confiscated just like in the UK and Australia. And who do you think will come and get them, fine gentlemen, who are predominantly white, male, and men who have families and children and men with whom or from whom you have taken carbine and pistol courses!

ParaElite. You must understand that people fear the SHTF scenario not just because someone is going to take their guns, it signals Federal troops executing orders against American Citizens. It's at that point that shooting back is important because if no one does we loose all our freedoms.

For the OP. I personally have actually been consolidating calibers so I can spend less on some many different calibers. I am sticking with AR's so I only have to worry about 5.56 rounds.
With the AR platform. you can have a SBR, Carbine, Varmint rifle and longish range shooter.

If you're set on a 7.62, get a Mosin that fires a 7.62x54R. they're fun and pack a punch. You can get the rifle for $100 and 440 rounds tins are $80-$90.

Mr. Scott,

There is no way that I will fire on Federal troops. Who is going to make these decisions? Who will decide what are infringements on our rights? Easier said than done. By making statements like this you are being irresponsible and what you are suggesting is sedition and treason. Think about it! Do you feel so alienated by this country that you are willing to fire on fellow Americans? As a reminder, the Civil War was lost by the Confederacy and they had a lot more going for them than a bunch of idiots running around in the woods. I was trained as a paratrooper and a military scout sniper, what is your training? Furthermore, the typical American citizen no longer has parity in weapons, organization, and the will to fight OUR government! Technology is on the side of OUR government. You are speaking nonsense, Sir!

Anyway, I apologize to the original OP for highjacking the thread.
