Robert and Linda Melanon exchanged good money and antique guns with an antique store in exchange for a Robert Sheetz made rifle that was used in the Battle of New Orleans. Their home was raided by the FBI which took possession of the rifle. It turns out that the antique store was not in the position to confer title of the gun when the exchange was made. I wish the Melanons well in recouping their firearms and money from that antique store. I'm sure the FBI has talked with the store owners (FBI has jurisdiction in museum thefts where the object in question is either over 100 years old or valued over $100k).

There is a legal concept of title. Title is more than a piece of paper that goes with the sale of a vehicle or house. It is the ability of the title holder to dispose of it as (s)he pleases. An object can be lost or stolen and title still remains with the title holder and not the possessor.
