No, I didn't get to take anything home - I was there to pick up my watch, after they put a new battery in it, but while I waited I perused the shelves. Lots of stuff, but one proud old girl stood out, a pencil barrel Smith Model 10, with a front sight like a ramped half moon, and Pachmeyer Presentation Grips on it. She had honest holster wear around the muzzle, obviously a working sidearm but one thing stopped me from wanting to look at the old girl...the $500 price tag. maybe I'm off base, but I figure that's about $200 or so too high. This shop doesn't dicker, either. Too bad, always had a soft spot for Smith Model 10s.

Yep, the prices often being asked for perfectly ordinary S&W M&P's or Model 10's are quite surprising to me, too. I don't understand why - can they really get this kind of money for them now? Maybe they are on consignment from people who are deluded about the value of their gun?

I first started buying guns in the early 1980's. Back then, I went to the local gun stores religiously. When one of them went out of business in the mid-to-late 1990's, they still had some overpriced guns on the shelf that had been there for at least 15 years. As a business practice, that's crazy.

Armoredman, I always stop and read your posts because I too like CZ's and, your fine pictures. I have noticed that around here old S&W's are getting harder to find and if you do find one they are at least $200 over price. A long time ago I paid close to $400 for a LNIB 4 inch model 10. On Auction arms, old Colts and S&W's are consistently bringing a premium. Both a good and a bad thing. Good for the ones we have and BAD for the one we WANT!

Armoredman:
Smith Model 10, with a front sight like a ramped half moon,

Please explain "a ramped half moon." The two don't go together. Either its a ramped quick draw blade , or its a half moon.

By "a ramped half moon" I think he means like this.

Two recent sales of 4 inch 10-5s on Gunbroker were $285 and $410.

All I can say even without looking at it is it is not a $500 gun! Especially without the original wood stocks (grips) Not like there wasn't a gazillion M 10's made.:)

Twiki has it right - that's what it looked like. I like Smith 38 revolvers, but I am no expert in them. litlman, thank you for the kind words! :)
This one is mine, my heirloom sidearm from my stepfather.

Sounds like a run in with an M10-5. Nice gun but 5 is pushing the price ATM.

All K frame Smith prices are rising quickly and the secret is out on the M10s. These things have seriously good actions but for five bills it needs to be LNIB.

I've been vacuuming up cheap m&ps and pre-10s on gunbroker...so far most expensive was $320 including shipping. Most were right around $250 shipped. I figure since the era of the cheap LE trade is pretty much over, best grab some interesting shooters while they are still reasonable.
I'm inkling to have one of each -dash number, and one of each revision of the model (1905 first, second, etc)

You can get a stainless Model 64-8 for under $350 from several places right now, including SOG's. Unless that Model 10 had collector value....

Last pre-Model 10 I bought I paid something like $230 cash to an older gentleman who had a table at the local gun show. It had a 5" barrel and he had added a trigger shoe and S&W target stocks to it. I t was his all purpose gun and while it was tight as a drum mechanically it did take some effort cleaning it and doing some cosmetic touches to get it back to it's former appearance of days gone by.

Last fall, a new gun store opened in a small town near me, and I dropped by, and spotted a virtually pristine 4" M10 with original grips. The guy told me it was on consignemnt from someone in the family of the owners. The asking price was $299. I was pretty sure this was an older gun, and thought it was a deal, regardless. I didn't need another toy at the time, or have the cash on me, but i hated to see it get away, and i recalled that an old buddy had mentioned wanting an older Smith wheelgun to replace some that he'd traded. I then drove into the middle of town and stopped at the city hall where the good buddy's wife works and told her all about it,and asked her to e-mail her hubby at work, since I couldn't do it then, and I wanted him to get a look at it as soon as possible.
Well, she immediately said, "I'm just gonna get it for him for his birthday", and she drove right over there and grabbed it.
That evening I got an e-mail from him, saying "Thanks for the heads up,bro !! That sweetheart is now parked in a nice old Bianchi holster I've had sitting in a drawer". So she apparantly didn't wait for Christmas!!
I asked my buddy to send me the serial number and I'd look up the date on some photocopies I have of S&W manufacturing dates, and it turned out to be from 1968 !!!
So my buddy got a nearly 50-year old S&W in almost factory new condition....for $299 !!!

I was at the range the other day and a young fellow offered me a very nice Model 10-5, with Magna's and a T-grip for $350.00. I told him his price was a fair one. I then suggested he list it on a local gun board asking $400.00, figuring "you can always come down, but you can't go up."

On the way out the door, he asked me..."How about $300.00?"

I was tempted. But I'm trying to hold the line on what I got these days.

However. I have seen Model 10/M&P's for much more, but it's condition, condition, condition...

S&W model 19 4" .357magnum .....

I went by a local low end gun shop/rental range near me about a month ago.
They had a limited selection, but what I was surprised by was a used S&W model 19 4" barrel revolver for $800.00.

That took aback. I've seen a few scams & gun prices that were off but that was a HoFer, :D .
The sad part is that some dumb gun buyer or new/entry level shooter will think the $800.00 is some relic or worth $800.00.

I have noticed the old S&W and Colt revolvers supply is drying up in my area. The last nice one I saw was a S&W model 15 that I snagged but it was in the $365 range. I think $500 is over priced for a model 10. There is currently one model 10 at my local gun/pawn establishment that is worn out and they are asking $280 for it, asking being the key word.

If a pawn shop won't budge on price I walk out the door, that is just stupid on their part if they are willing to let stuff sit on the shelf for months or years in the hopes a sucker is going to walk in and pay their inflated price.

Bud's currently has some police trade-ins in their "hot selling items" section for $319.

Wonder what it would cost to have them machined for something like Mdl. 15 adjustable sights?

Older revolvers in Detroit suburbs are ridiculous. LGS has a 38/44 Heavy Duty at $950, Colt New Police, from the 20's, 32 cal nickel for $425, and a Colt Detective Special, 80%, at $650. I love these old revolvers, just not enough to pay those prices.

Yep, $200 high. Now days they think a grungy old smith is some kind of gold.

Those are "famous last word" words,,,

Those are "famous last word" words.

Kind of like when a redneck says,,,
"Hey guys, hold my beer."

How many weeping stories have we read,,,
And how many have I started with,,,
"I went into The Evil Pawn Shop." :banghead:

Gentlemen,,,
We are adults,,,
When will we learn?

These places only exist to drain our wallets. :(

When will the madness stop!

More than a comparable Model 15 would cost.

I got a great condition Model 64 S&W .38 special revolver from J&Gs for $299 about 6 months ago. Ex brink security guard trade in gun.

Greatest firearm deal I've ever had, this thing shoots like a billion trillion benjamins!!
