My 15 year old granddaughter accompanied me to the range today. She has shot mostly .22 rifles in her previous trips. Today she decided to try a centerfire revolver.

I had staked out pendulum/spinner targets, those that are about 2 inches in diameter, at 15 yards. She chose the Smith and Wesson Model 15 and hit the spinners more times than she missed, shooting two-handed over an improvised rest (folded soft long gun zipper case). She said it was more fun to shoot the target .38 Special loads instead of the .22s.

It was fun to watch a 15 year old girl focus on sight picture and trigger control with a classic revolver and achieve respectable results. I'm thinking of adding a note in my will...I'm thinking this Model 15 should go to her.

i recently got my first model 15 n i gotta agree with your granddaughter. the weight of the 15 tames the recoil somewhat.
i find plastic 9mms uncomfy, but 38s are doable.
girls need heavy guns.

If anyone ever made a better 4", 38 revolver, I haven't found it. There are many that in my humble opinion, come close, but none that are better.

They didn't call them "Masterpiece" for no reason.

Your granddaughter chose wisely. :D

I love the model 15. I have the wide spurred hammer and trigger, a dream to shoot. The force is strong with this young lady!

Outstanding.

Few things are more satisfying than watching your progeny excel.

Especially when shooting!

:)

Memories... I have a pre-Model 15 Combat Masterpiece that my father bought new in 1955. I have the receipt. It was exactly $50 at a sports store in Seattle that no longer exists.

I grew up handling that revolver and dry firing it at the TV set thousands upon thousands of times... naturally after ensuring it was safe, unloaded, and shown to my father with the action open before "firing a shot". Great memories. I still have that revolver... too bad there's no one to pass it down to!

Rain Dodger you can pass it down to me I'm much younger than you and will love it like it ought to be loved

I carried & used the S&W , M15 while in the USAF. It was a very accurate revolver & pleasant to shoot. I picked up a used Police turn in for $280.00 and have been very happy with it as it was in excellent condition. I use it mostly for targets now but it would make a fine EDC revolver if that is what you choose. The Rugers are also excellent revolvers. But I am a S&W fan!

I love the K-frame Masterpiece series. Got a 5-screw CM from 1954 and a M67 no dash with the stainless steel sights. They both have honest wear and I've shot some of my best groups with them.

You had to think about it?

It became hers at the first target she hit.

I envy you.
Teaching my children and grandson how to shoot, and time we went out to take on the soda cans are a very fond memory.
My grandson is now a Marine.
(He started shooting with me at age 9... I guess he impressed his instructors on how fast he picked up their instruction... Shot expert every time.)

Enjoy you range sessions with her.
Quality time with Dad will long be remembered.

Lucky Guy...

Steve

I guess you've never shot a Rohm (RG)! :what:
Obviously I'm just kidding!

That sounds like a great memory with your granddaughter. Some of my most fond memories have been shooting with my nieces.

I love the S&W Model 15 as a duty and target revolver. I do tend to lean towards the -6 and -7 variants as they have the heavy barrel over the tapered barrels of the original Combat Masterpiece models had. Seems to me they group a bit tighter.

I shoot mine most often with Swaged 148 grn HBWCs over 2.7 grns Bullseye.

Makes me look good in front of whippersnappers with the Tupperware fantastics!

The shame of my existence is when I was in my 20s (1990s) when working extra as security, I tended to overlook it for the Model 19s with 4in barrels loaded with Federal 125 grn Magnum loads, thinking I was better off......:(

Shame on me.

Hands down my favorite .38 special. Probably the most fun wheel gun to shoot all day. Cast 125g Lee rnfp over a medium bullseye charge turns that pistol into a laser. She did good!

Why wait ? give it to her now so she can still thank you while your here. You could still hold it for her if need be. I agree about the best 4" handgun made I picked up a 5 screw from a couple and it was her Fathers gun. I assured her it was in good hands.

Good girl...... You have a future recoil junky on your hands. She'll be shooting X Frames in no time. :)

I think it should be gifted to her while you are still alive. Maybe when she moves into her own household. The Model 15 makes a perfect home defense gun.
