I wanted pick up some extra ammo prior to going to the range this weekend.

Local gun store:
-no 9mm FMJ, been out for over a week and don't know when they're going to get their next shipment
-no slugs of any kind for the shottie, only had buck shot

Walmart Superstore:
-I just found out they don't carry ammo
-Their reasoning, "Sorry, but we don't carry ammo because we're near a school."
Oh gee, there's a school every few miles. You're always going to be near a school.

I thought going to brick-and-mortar stores are supposed to be quick and convenient. I'm just going to have to order online and place a HUGE order and stock up on more ammo than I am used to.

No Ammo sales near school

Wow thats funnie becuase the Wally world on Spencer here in Henderson NV sells ammo, and there right accross the street from a high school. :what:

Ammo shortage

Screehopper--Lokifish has it right. Not running short of ammo is one of the reasons that SWMBO has never objected to my reloading. I'm NEVER out of ammo, and get reloading supplies ahead of need so those never run out either. :)

Mail-ordering bullets and brass is advantageous. (Well, except that bullets are HEAVY, and run up the freight bill. Sigh.) Getting powder and primers locally saves the Hazmat fee, if there is a reliable source near you.

Before you start buying reloading equipment, though, read up on the subject, and save yrself some bad bargains. The ABC's of Reloading is the standard text on the subject. Put out by Krause Publishing, www.krause.com

Location?

Either the Wally World or the Academy just down the road usually have AT LEAST WW FMJ in stock. Academy's prices (last I looked ) were a bit bit better by almost $2/box of 50 on the WW 115gr JHP stuff, too.

I'm surprised there's a 9mm shortage in your area. Heck, just demand from the local gang-bangers around here is enough to keep the stores stocked up.

Here's one reasoning behind the near-a-school excuse. Do they think that some kid's going to go in and buy ammo so he can play Columbine Kamakaze? What would stop the same person from going to a gun shop or hunting supply store instead? If someone wanted to get ammo, they'll get it by any means.

Just came from the Gun Show. Seemed to be no shortage there. And people were buying it almost just as fast as the guy could take their money. I bought a box of Fiocci .25 ACP for $7.95 + sales tax and my son bought a box of Aguilla .45 ACP for $8.95 + sales tax. Cheapest I've seen it for a while.

Thanks for the links on reloading. I have lots of researching to do before I can get into it.
