So I just placed an order for a dedicated DPMS .22LR upper to maintain the feel of my AR without the $0.40/round.

However, I'd like to keep my .556 upper in good shape and bring it with me. I've found bags that hold an AR broken down into upper and lower but the bags are too bulky for just an upper. Others use an M240 barrel bag but those have no padding. Youth rifle bags are too long.

What do you guys use to store/transport your extra uppers?

Any two gun case will do. I understand the M240 barrel bag issue, I use it to transport my 6.8 when broken down. Lack of padding is relative, it has the heat resistant liner the M60 barrel bag only dreams about.

Transporting an additional upper is actually rare in the AR world even tho it's always talked up about what a great advantage the AR is to be able to do it. Mostly because the uppers do tend to grow their own lower dedicated to that specific use.

Here's a start on what's available: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=two+gun+cases&FORM=HDRSC2

I usually just lay them on the seat. But then, I live in a rural area, and my "range" is at a buddy's place just 6 miles away.

Very true. Of course, for those in a ban state, it's still a real advantage, and I'd also venture that most of us who play the SBR game don't bother to register multiple lowers. I know I didn't. 4 short uppers, one pistol lower and one SBR lower to swap them around on.

I'm not sure how long you need....

I have a SxS shot gun that I've been know to break down, wrap in a towel, and put in this. It travels well. $10. Zips closed. Has handles on the ends. I was wanting someting nondescript for travelling (driving / car to hotel room)

Search for "rope bag" for similar such as this (below) that has shoulder straps(but I don't like the type of closure it has).

Generally, rope bags tend to be a thinner and softer material than tactical molle strap riddled cases etc so keep that in mind. But the 1st seems like it would do what your looking for.

Or.... something else I'm working on for the SxS. This one has a little pouch on the outside.

Also ukulele cases come in different lengths and have some padding built in. I plan on still wrapping it in a towel.

Uncle Mike's makes a 2 upper carrying case for about $25. I toss my DPMS .22 in one side and either a .223 or .300 BLK in the other side when I carry my 6.8 to the range.

I don't have an extra upper but I often transport my rifles broken down because they're too long to fit in my duffel bag or plastic bin when assembled. It's an AR, no padding needed. If the spray paint on mine gets scratched it's pretty easy to find Rustoleum if I feel the scratch needs covered. If you really feel you need padding, wrap a sweatshirt around it.

Yep, well aware it's an AR and can take the beating. Simply put, I'd rather not beat them up more than necessary. I put my guns in padded bags to keep them in as good shape as possible but no I don't cry when they get scratched.

When/if I ever sell my AR, I'd like to get top dollar.

That's what the sweatshirt is for. :D

I'm thinking the hard plastic foam lined rifle cases designed for two rifles. You could easily fit an AR and 2-3 additional uppers.
