Let's just say the SHTF and you opt to head for the hills. Eventually you may be on foot  , what gun/s would you take? Would you take a handgun ? Or would that weight be better carried in the form of ammo for something else ? Would you opt for a shotgun ? Or a .22lr/22mag, or a combo gun .22/20ga or ? Maybe you'd grab the AR ? Or how about a lever action .38/.357 w/a snub nose for a sidekick ?
I'm sure there has been enough of this kind of thread but I just wanted to rehash it :D

I'm wondering why I am running away from my place in the woods to go to another place in the woods WITHOUT all the comforts of home, and why I can't stay here with ALL my guns and ammo?

I'm also wondering why you don't just fire up the search window on this site and find all 456,987,483,996,672 posts on this very subject... (statistics in this post have been exxagerated to clarify):D

Oh yeah, I hope all you folks head for the woods. I plan on hunkering with my friends and neighbors.

Clue #1) Ain't nothin' you can eat in the woods without extensive activity and preparation.

Clue #2) Gonna be a lot of other fools with guns thinking that they're gonna live off the land, now that civilization has ground to a halt.

Clue #3) Takes a heckuva lot to slow down civilization, much less stop the delivery of cold frosty beverages for more than three-four days running.

I'm getting really, really, really, tired of the SHTF threads (especially during the Katrina period)...really, do searches.

Unless you have a new thread that is actually interesting and unique, please don't start more SHTF threads. Guns, gear, and problem-solving on this subject has been covered well enough.

I don't mean to squash your enthusiasm, though- just search, and you will find everything you need...

ill be different and actually answer the question and not belittle the orig poster.

lets forget the shtf part and just call the question' one gun for outdoor survival'.

id want a 22lr/.410 over and under break action. id want lots of .410 slugs and 22lr ammo and a few shot shells for the odd bird. the slugs would take care of deer or whatever else i might need to kill thats big and the 22 would be great for the small critters so i didnt destroy too much meat.

i am open to other combo guns in different calibers and gauges but i like em small and lightweight if i have to walk very far with em.

handgun? not for survival. its extra weight. if im taking extra things ill take ammo or parts that may break on my primary rifle.

Torn. It's a toss-up between running amok with my shotgun (versatility) or a .22 rifle (lots and lots and lots of ammo)...

I would disagree. I think you are tending to look at the world through a gun-owners perspective, and we are in a minority. It may seem like a predominant viewpoint online, but its really not in the big scheme of the world.

And of the gun owners, I think a very small fraction will actually bug-out, the majority (including myself) will bug-in if at all possible.

However I could see a few possible scenarios requiring a 'bug-out', and overcrowding of wild areas is a small concern for me.

As for my gun choice, I would bring my bolt-action Tikka 30-06. Versatile enough for varied game and defense, reliable, lightweight, and accurate. Last thing I would want is being hungry because I see a deer 200 yards away and am stuck using a revolver or a shotgun. A revolver would be a very good sidearm, however--good for smaller game at closer ranges like rabbits and squirrels.

I just wanted to rehash it.
Seriously, there is so much hash around here on this subject we could make breakfast for the entire US Army. It's been hashed, rehashed and hashed again.

Sure it could be moved to the Strategies and Tactics forum. But, the general rule there is, and I quote, [questions like] "What gun and how much ammo do I need for a civil disturbance or the end of the world? Is not on topic and will be closed or deleted."

Closed.
