Greetings,

Relevant information:
.Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm
.Mixed brass
.9mm FMJ 115 grains Zero
.4.9 grains Unique powder
.Wolf Small pistol Primers

Newbie reloader here. Yesterday I loaded 10 rounds andwnet to shoot at the range to check if they are working ok with my pistol. They worked fine. So, today I reloaded 150 rounds and went to the range with my wife. We shot about 100 rounds of my reload and 75 rounds of commercial Winchester.

We both noticed we got some stuff in the face (like one grain of sand) when we shot the reloaded ammo and not the commercial ammo (In fact, I never felt anything with the 2-3k commercial rounds I shot previously with my Taurus.). It happened 3 times to my wife and 4 times to me.

What is the issue? Did I do something wrong? Do I have to be concerned?

Thank you

Unique is kind of a dirty burning powder. I have had this happen with other powders though. try going to something quicker burning, like 231 or red dot

+1 on the titegroup. I load a lot of 9mm and quickly gave up Unique as being annoyingly dirty.

In addition, that's a very light load, and your cases my not be expanding fully, allowing unburnt powder and "stuff" to blow back out during ejection. An excess of burnt material around the case mouth can indicate this. When using UNQ I preferred 5.4gr under a 115gr bullet.

Greetings,

I'll try to load with a little bit more grains. 5.4 with Unique is the max in the book. I think I'll try to go from 4.9 to 5.1.

Thank you!

dunno how it burns in 9mm, but titegroup sure doesn't burn clean in 45acp

You have to either get away from Unique or shoot with the wind. I would recommend what a few have already suggested W-231 or Power Pistol. Both burn pretty clean and more completely. What you are getting in your face is incomplete burned powder...

Greetings,

I have 8 pounds of Unique. I'll load my next rounds with 5.25 grains. Let's see if it will change the outcome.

Thank you

Ditto, and you get that "Titegroup stain" on the brass which means more tumble time and less life from your media, and it just bugs me.

AA #2 & AA #5 are real clean in the .45. So is N320, but pricey. WST and Competition are two other very good choices. I suspect WSF & True Blue would do very well, but have not tried them yet.

I'd check a couple more loading manuals too. I think Alliant recommends 5.5 gr. and they're pretty conservative.

I use Unique in my 9MM's with no problems.
