Good Morning Y’all and Happy New Year!

I was gifted a nice chrono for Christmas this year, a ProChronoDLX and got out to the range yesterday to test my reloads for the first time. If you are so inclined, I’d love get some feedback about the results.

I did three tests of 10 rounds each through my Glock 19. Tests were done about one minute apart. Temperature was 48F.

Test 1 - 9mm 115 grain Xtreme Copper Plated
Hodgon CFE Pistol 5.4 gr load
COL: 1.100
Using Hodgson 115 gr LRN reload data (from hogdon website)
Range: 4.9 (1124 fps) - 5.4 (1209 fps)
10 Shot Average: 1042 with a 111 fps extreme spread.
Average Power Factor: 119 (high/low - 128 / 115)
Shots (fps):
1057, 1022, 1004, 1026, 1012, 1066, 1057, 1038, 1032, 1115

I’m a little low with the average fps being 1042. I’m wondering if that may be due to the load data I’m using, which is for lead round nose and I’m using copper plated round nose? Note: Xtreme bullets are rated to 1200 fps. So I don’t want to exceed that.

Test 2 - 9mm 124 grain Xtreme Copper Plated
Hogdon CFE Pistol 5.4 gr load
COL: 1.150
Using Lee 124 gr copper plated data from Lee reloading book that came with my press.
Range: 4.9 (1006 fps) - 5.5 (1120 fps)
10 Shot Average: 1025 with 76 fps extreme spread.
Average Power Factor: 127 (high/low - 131 / 122)
Shots (fps):
1058, 1042, 1063, 1025, 1021, 1034, 1005, 1035, 988, 987

This set was more in line with the range I was expecting.

Test 3 - 9mm 147 grain Xtreme Copper Plated
Hogdon CFE Pistol 4.4 gr load
COL: 1.130
Using Speer 147 gr TMJ FN data from Speer website.
Range: 4.1 (897 fps) - 4.6 (980)
10 Shot Average: 932 with 75 fps extreme spread.
Average Power Factor: 137 (high/low - 141 / 130)
Shots (fps):
926, 931, 898, 922, 944, 955, 964, 948, 948, 889

This set was also more in line with the range I was expecting.

Thanks for your feedback!

I’m a little low with the average fps being 1042. I’m wondering if that may be due to the load data I’m using, which is for lead round nose and I’m using copper plated round nose?

Yes. When loading (same weight/shape) lead and jacketed/plated bullets with the same load, the jacketed/plated bullets will be slower.

You may want to go a little hotter with loads one and two, if you’re trying to reproduce factory target offerings. Otherwise, they look fine to me.

If your not shooting a gun game that requires a certain PF and like how they shoot and function, put the chronograph back up and be happy.

30 shots and your chrono survived! I’d call it a good day.

Rarely do I see my loads velocity perform like the published data. The majority of them are under, which is fine with me. I was wondering what you meant by “..range I was expecting”. The “range” row in your data I’m assuming is start to max charge with corresponding expected velocity at that charge weight. In your first set, you were at 5.4gr of CFEP, so you would expect an avg vel of 1209, if in fact you could exactly duplicate published data, which is difficult at best.
The data you collected looks reasonable to me and similar to what I’ve observed with CFEP in 9mm. Good luck.

When I run mine, I look for 2 things primarily... Average Velocity and Standard deviation, after that, I look at the shot location to see how they place.

if they place good, and the Standard Deviation is low, then I’m happy unless I am way off on velocity, then I start over changing powder or load data or both...

Good Luck, Chrony’s are a great tool for me

Yep, I use mine looking for the same. A velocity that I want and that is not excessive and a reasonably low SD. Outside of that, I don't get too concerned. Accurate rifles are another story. I pay more attention.

If you're loading on a progressive and using a powder meter with a fine ball powder like CFE, I think it's hard to get a decent SD as small changes in volume have a larger impact on velocity. And, there will be fluctuation. Hand-weighting might make your velocities and your SD look better. I think at some point all of us settle on a SD range that we're happy with for our loads.

For me, if I’m loading for accuracy, I trickle charge each powder load into a balance scale. That for me, results in low numbers SD(Best yet - single digit).
