I beleive it can only be 1:7 or 1:9. Wilson standard m4 16" I bought it over a year ago when I built the m4gery but I cant remember the twist rate on it and it was before I was patient or carring enought to worry about the ballistics and different bullet weights. Is there any wya to find out the twist?

I would recommend e-mailing the manufacturer, but i once read that you could run one of those high-quality cleaning rods with the rotating handle through it slowly ( obviously with a brush on it), put a piece of tape on the rod to mark position, and measure the distance that one rotation takes.

Use your cleaning rod with a snug patch, just push through bore untill it makes a complete revolution, then measure distance.Sharpie markers are handy for this.(index mark & distance mark)

If it's a Wilson produced barrel, 99% of them are 1/9".

If it's a Wilson Combat AR, it's 1/9".

Wilson provides most of the barrels to the AR15 industry (besides Colt, Noveske, a few others).

Most commercial grade AR's use a 1/9" twist barrel.

Do you know of any over the counter M4 types, besides Colt, LMT, or Noveske, that are commonly available with a 1/7" barrel?

Not trying to be argumentative on this.

Charles Daly, CMMG, Colt, LMT, Noveske and Sabre Defence all use 1:7 as a standard twist rate and Armalite, Bustmaster, Rock River Arms all offer it as an option.

What weight bullets have you been using? Twist rates relate to projectile length, a 1:7 rate is better for longer, therefore heavier projectiles, say 75 or 77grs. Slower twist rates like 1:9 are better suited for lighter 45 to 62gr weights. Like any rifled system your results may vary depending on propellant type, gas system length, projectile construction, bore condition, throat geometry, etc, etc.

Someone noted it should be stamped on the barrel and they are correct.
