Let me start by explaining that this is a story that a friend of mine shared with me, and I don't have any details other than what you are about to read.

So I have a few friends that work at a restaurant here in Baton Rouge. After normal hours, the restaurant is sometimes rented out for private parties. Usually the restaurant doesn't have any security of its own, but on this particular night, a security company (I believe it was 3 guards) was hired for the party. This company was not hired by the restaurant itself, but by the person or organization that was having the party. The way I understood it was that the owner of the security company was friends with whoever was throwing the party and that is why they were hired.

My friend was bartending, so he had a good view of what these guys were doing all night. To start off, he noticed that some of the security personnel were dancing and partying (but not drinking) like they were part of the party. Only difference was they had XD40s strapped to their hips. :uhoh:
Dumb move #1

This restaurant isn't in the best of areas, and the parking lot is not well lit, but for large parties porta-potties are placed outside for the guests. As the night progressed, my friend was outside smoking a cigarette when a girl near him said that she needed to go to the restroom, but she was scared to go alone. My buddy and one of the security personnel say that they will escort her. As they start to walk over there, my buddy noticed that the security guard had drawn his weapon and was holding it at his side, at the ready.
My buddy finally convinces him to place his weapon back in his holster because there are obviously no threats present.
Dumb move #2

Anyway, later on the same friend (I'll call him friend #1 from now on) was in the back of the restaurant, (kitchen, I guess) with another one of the security personnel, and another friend of mine (friend #2). Friend #2's father owns a gun store, and he's been brought up around guns his whole life. Friend #1 was never really brought up around guns, and had never shot a pistol up until recently (with yours truly). Anyway, friend #2 asks the security guard if he can see his pistol. Without hesitation, the guy pulls out his pistol and hands it to friend #2, fully loaded!!!!:what:
Friend #1, although he's had very little experience with guns, had enough common sense to say "Don't you think you should at least unload your pistol before handing it to someone you don't even know!?" So the guy takes his pistol back, drops the mag and opens the action and hands it back to friend #2.
Dumb move #3

Eventually I think that the restaurant asked the security company to leave, because they felt safer without them there.

Like I said before, I don't know any more details of what happened so don't bother asking. I'm not sure if this was a combination of stupidity by all 3 of the security guards or just one in particular.

With the way these security guards behaved that night, I can understand why some companies wouldn't want their employees carrying guns. These guys were obviously just trying to show everyone that they possess the "power." They were in no position to protect the people at the party, and actually put them in danger by showing a complete lack of common sense while being armed.

I am disgusted by people like this. People that completely disregard any common sense rules with firearms are almost as bad as criminals in my book. After all, the only thing setting these guys apart from criminals was a negligent discharge.

Definitely sounds like the spirit of Barney Fife is alive and well in the rent a cop business. Glad the restaurant sent them on the way.

I grew up in Baton Rouge and miss it. Sometimes :neener:

They sound like pretty nice guys. Perhaps a little too trusting to be excellent security guards. Perhaps not. THere's a chance that they looked to your gun-smart buddy as a leader of sorts. And if so, they might have let their guards down around him, but not around the rest of the crowd.

I'm just throwing out a possibility. It seems quite possible to me since they were obviously willing to take orders from him(he told them to holster their weapons and they did, correct?)

You could be right. I mean I wasn't there, but I think it took some convincing to get him to reholster his weapon.

You make a good point though.

These guys were probably just caught up in the moment. I beleive they were all in their early 20's, and I think the party's average age was around there too. They may be new to carrying a gun and were just trying to show off, causing them to neglect common sense. I'd like to believe it was an eye opening situation for them, and they will learn to be more responsible when armed.

I'm pretty new to cc (about 3 months now) and I must admit I had the urge to let people know "I've got the power." However, education and just plain common sense has prevented me from acting like an idiot.

I'm exactly the opposite of you. My instincts tell me to keep it a secret from EVERYBODY that I have a firearm. I don't want anyone to know I'm armed until after I've emptied the magazine into the bad guy.

A weapon is far far more deadly if no one knows it exists.

The point I was trying to make was that initially I "had the urge."

Having the urge to do something does not demonstrate who a person really is. Actions are the real representation of a person's true character.

I have always kept my firearm a secret and avoid printing at all costs (even though open carry is legal here).

I understand. I'm saying the "urge" never even entered my mind. Quite the opposite. For me it was fear of being found out, and thus my advantage of surprise would be lost.

We are complete opposites.

I tend towards being paranoid one person will find out, then tell another, then another, then pretty soon someone will recognize me and try to take my gun from me when I'm not looking. I got over it after awhile, but that's my natural tendency.

As I see it, there are two kinds of guys when it comes to fistfights. There are the ones that get loud and angry when they feel threatened. They want the opponent to back down without an actual fight. Then there is my type. The type that doesn't want the opponent to know there's going to be a fight until after the first punch is thrown, and hopefull the first punch is also the last. That's me.

This strategy applies to gunfights as well. I don't know which is better. I just know which comes natural to me and which doesn't.

It sounds to me that the "security detail" were just three "friends" that recently got guns.:uhoh:

Security guy at a local bar I frequent double tapped some idiot at 75ft across an unlit parking lot when the idiot started shooting at someone else in the parking lot.
Turns out the security guard is former Spetnaz....
This is a bar that has 2 huge dents on the INSIDE of the steel door from a 12guage..

It makes me recall a story from when I worked in private security; about an idiot guard practicing quikdraws in front of a bathroom mirror. the mentioned idiot accidentally shot the mirror. This happened while he was on the job!

here's a lucky one,

this young man had his 1911 .45 out, doing whatever I don't know but failed to handle his firearm correctly. He went to put it back into his belt holster the gun went off.
The bullet went into his wallet, must have been a thick one too because the spent bullet fell down his pants leg.
Beside being deaf, unharmed but scared to death, all of his credit cards, drivers license a valuable stuff had a hole through it...except for is carry permit, it was unharmed.

If there were as many Diamonds as there is Sand, they wouldn't be worth anything.
People that use their intelligence = Diamonds.
Owning a gun, or not owning a gun does nothing to the above equation.

I don't know what the licensing and bonding requirements are in LA, but don't they have to be trained, licensed, bonded, insured, etc? Shouldn't these guys have been required to demonstrate that they can find their butts with two hands or less before they do any job that has 'armed' in the title?

Speaking of dumb people with guns..... I understand being new to guns and everything, hell I certainly am not an expert by any stretch of the word!! But at a safety course I attended (the class was big, and there were actually about an even ratio of men v. women), the instructor was passing around different handguns to familiarize everyone with them, let them feel them and which one they liked, and to practice loading/unloading procedures, etc..... well this woman sitting next to me REPEATEDLY pointed the gun at me, I literally had to tell her 20 times to please not point the gun at me. I was trying to be nice..... but every time I told her she was just like oh yah, uh huh, and kept doing it. This chick scares me, she kept putting her finger on the trigger while she was failing miserably at trying to lock the slides..... again I would correct her. She just wasn't paying attention when handling the guns and ran her mouth the whole time. Like I said, I understand being new, but that should just motivate you more to be REALLY DAMN CAREFUL. I know that these were all un-loaded or only contained dummy rounds....but still. Nothing like paying attention to something else, looking over, and seeing a gun pointed at you. Ugh, I am going to stay FAR away from her on the range!

Hired!!

Exactly what I was thinking....

I was at a nursing home waiting for somone. Two Officers walked in and one went to talk to someone. I look up at other Officer. We chat for few seconds. I look at his revolver. "Is that a security six or a speed six?" He says "I don't know" and pulls it out and hands it to me. LOADED...... I open cylinder and remove bullets as he partner comes around corner. DEAD STOP by Officer #2 as I hand ammo back to #1 and say "yep its a security six" and hand gun back. (with my fingers thru crane opening) Chat for few seconds and leave. I hear #2 saying "DO YOU KNOW THAT GUY?" #1 "no" and I was out door. I assume he got chewed out.

Stick with Factory loads!

These Gents do not seem like practiced reloaders, stick with factory-loaded .45 ACP loads. One can NEVER go wrong with a .45 ACP generic load for safe self-defense by Hornady. cliffy

er, Monkeyboy1975, when you say the guard was "on the job" do you mean he was at work at the time, or pinching one off? :)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this but had I been the restaruant owner those 3 Yo-Yos would have been out the door as soon as they unholstered

an idiot with a loaded firearm is much more dangerous usually than an unarmed idiot.
I say usually because idiots are just so damm creative.
like the hero fisherman dragged up some form of incendiary bomb brought it to shore drove 5 miles through town on his motorbike to present it to yours truly asking if the army had lost it:(

He was at work, on a clients property, standing in front of the mirror.
