Looking for a tried and tested, true subsonic load for .22 hornet. Anyone have data? Nothing nefarious, and yes, I realize there is a host of commercially available subsonic .22s in long, short, and lr, but I’d like to push a heavier bullet. Rifle is basically a box stock Ruger 77/22 Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.

With cast gas checked bullets, loads as low as 1.5gr. of Red Dot work fine...accuracy is rifle dependent...sounds about like a .22 LR subsonic. Do have to keep the bullets rather short for the 1:16 wist barrels used on most .22hornets.

Plain based bullets (or the same bullets as above without the gas check applied) work with as little as .8gr. of Red Dot for 600-700fps. I just don't load that low with gas checked bullets as I've seen gas checks left in the bore...you'd have no clue: rifle would still go "bang" and the bullet would exit and hit the target, the gas check could still be in the bore. If you fire a bullet behind that sutck gas check, and you can ding the bore.

With jacketed bullets won't go below 1200-1300fps, which sounds loud compared to the lead bullet loads. 3.5gr. of unique will do the trick with any 40-45gr. jacketed bullet, going something between 1280 and 1340fps. (lot of different bullets, so it's harder to predict the velocity).

BTW: these are fun loads, but NOT toys. Will hunt small game with these and basically use them for anything you'd use a .22RF for.

Sounds like you have some experience with this ribbonstone. I am looking to push a 50-55gn bullet (or as heavy as I can stabilize) at around 1050fps. Sort of an all weather subsonic. Instead of going directly to the cast bullets, would the old .223 diam Hornet bullets serve the same purpose as going lead? (My bore is .224) The main reason I ask, is I have a lot of .223 and .224 jacketed on hand and no cast bullets in this caliber. I am not sure what weights will stabilize at this low velocity so I hesitate to buy.
Thanks
