Since I sold my Model 10 this weekend due to financial hardship, I decided when I went to replace it, (probably for x-mas), i'd like to replace it with a nice single action.

With that in mind ...

.357 single action suggestions? (+1 for pics)

aaaaaaaand ... GO! :D

If it were me, I would look to buy one of the Colt SAA clones. 5 1/2" barrel, stag grips. Good package for the 357.

The Ruger, actually most Ruger models, are a bit heavy for the cartridge.

Rugers are hard to beat

They are well made, priced reasonably, strong action, and accurate. That's a winning combination for a first rate American company.

Yeah - Ruger Blackhawk (4-3/4" barrel, blue, 357 magnum). I got a used 1976 bicentennial edition a few years ago (seems to be the same as any other New Model except for the extra rollstamp on the barrel). The trigger is so nice I suspect the previous owner had it tweaked, although it may just be well broken-in. I put a set of Pachmayr Presentation grips on it because I never did like the small, slick stock grips, and the Pachmayrs retain the old-timey look.

It's accurate enough for informal bullseye shooting with target loads, strong enough for full-power hunting loads, looks and feels great. You also have a lot of choices in holsters (off-the-shelf or custom, plastic or leather).

I have owned a lot of them and I like the Colt copies over

the Rugers. I don't need the adjustable sights, don't like the coil spring mooshy trigger.
I really enjoy the .45 Colt in a SAA type revolver - I just don't want to spend the money for a Colt.
I have owned Ubertis from several importers, and have not had a bad one. The only one I own now is a Pieta, a great 4 5/8" barrel version in all polished stainless steel with the old single piece walnut grip. Very tight, very accurate, light and easy to carry.

And fun to shoot. FWIW, I like the .357's, too - especially cause you can shoot specials in it.
Very versatile gun in .357.
The .45 Colt is a good home defender if that's what you have and you know how to use it - only 5 shots before the slower re-load, but those first 5 opponents are in deep trouble.

Track down a Ruger 50th Anniversary Flat Top, there are a few out there right now and very reasonably priced. They seemed to be finished to a higher standard also and have the medium size frame.

The 50th is in the middle. To it's left is a 1957 Flat Top and to the right is a Lipsey's .44 Special Flat Top.

I have a Colt (2nd Edition) SAA in .357. It's a great revolver, but I feel guilty every time I strap it on and climb onto my horse. It's too expensive a collector's gun to be battered around in the woods.

For a woods gun, I'd go with the Ruger.

Thanks for the replies!

My favorite autoloader of all time is the Ruger mk II, so with all the suggestions for Ruger here I might try out a blackhawk or vaquero to see if they fit my large hands.

Cookies to Salvo for the pics!

Feel free to keep em coming!

+1 on the Rugers. I think that they set the USA standard a lot of years ago, and nothing the company has done since has changed my mind. I've got Rugers that I bought in the 1960s that are still in 100% perfect working condition and are still favorite range companions. Tough to be, in my estimation.

Ruger New Model Blackhawk - Convertable SA Revolver

BN-36XL 10318 .357 Mag./.38 SPL/ 9mm Luger 6.50" (Barrel) 12.38" (Overall Length) 48.00 oz. 1:16" RH (Twist) 8 (Groves)

This guns fires .357 Mag, .38 Special, and 9MM. I love mine and will never part with it.

If you can only have one choice, a Ruger Blackhawk in .357. If you want blue, go with the 50th and get the mid-size size frame. If you want stainless you will need to go with the larger frame size.
If you don't care about the sights, you can get a mid-size frame in a Bisley. May be the best choice of them all.

Cant beat the Blackhawk for the price. Hogue grip is my preference.

A convertible single action. What a novel idea! My main squeeze (no pun intended) is a Beretta 92fs right now. A single action revolver that could do .357 and 9mm would fit me like a charm.

... and if they don't have any of those in stainless, the New Blackhawk will be adorning my side instead most likely.

Very nice pictures guys. Can't wait till the next gun show so I can go Revolver handling.

I have the 4 5/8" Blackhawk Convertible... Great gun. Very accurate, fairly compact, but I love the versatility. I shoot 9mm the most as I don't reload and it's the cheapest and plenty accurate for plinking out to 25 yards.

Looks like you and I are the only ones not drinking the Ruger Kool Aid!

I guess I'll be the first to suggest you sold a fantastic SA revolver - that Model 10! Check with J&G Sales, etc, for in-stock security guard trade-in SS versions - the Model 64 - with hammers (They were pushing their bobbed hammer/DAO versions for ~$200 in decent shape.) so you can shoot SA. A K/L/N frame S&W is a super SA revolver. If you really 'need' .357 Magnum, consider a 65/66 or even a current 620.

Of course, an odd offshoot of a S&W .38/.357M is that, in a hurry, they'll go bang without cocking the hammer!

+1 on the Ruger 357/9mm Convertable. I have the 4 5/8" model. It's the only single action I have. I have 3 GP100's and a Glock 19. I do not reload, so for me the convertable was the best choice.

Even though there's nothing wrong with a Blackhawk I'm a little partial to an original Ruger Bisley Vaquero with Walnut grips.
(I do like color case hardening over Stainless though)

+1 on the 65, Stainz; I love that bull barrel!

I round-butted a 4" a few years back; what a sweet carry piece.
