I live in New York and I want to carry a functional EDC knife, but I also do not want to get into trouble for it. I was thinking something along the lines of a Spyderco Tenacious or something similar, but again not sure on legality.

So basically what I'm asking, can someone who lives in New York or is familiar suggest an EDC blade to me? Folding and fixed suggestions are welcome, thanks for the input.

I have never been to NY, but there was an article years ago called "knives for the big apple" in tactical knives magazine. They suggested fixed blades under 3 1/2 or 4" (someone who knows NY will be along to clarify), such as the bud nealy aikuchi. I'd therefore lean towards a boker/nealy or a spyderco Perrin or some such small fixed blade.

FWEIW.

Fixed blades for the big apple?

That writer needs to have his head examined or be made responsible for the person being arrested because of that arcticle. A fixed blade knife in NYC will have you spending some time in Rikers Island. NY is a very anti knife place, and the cops love to bust you for a knife. It's an easy collar.

We go there about once very month or two just for the fun of it, and I just take a small pocket knife like a Case peanut. It's NY. You're not going to need much knife there anyway. For defense my stoutest blackthorn is with me right in hand.

The very term NY, and the word knife don't go well together.

NYC or NY state? In NYC they will arrest you for any type of one handed opening knife. They claim it is a gravity knife. If I have to go to NYC I only bring a small SAK. Outside of the city any folding knife works for me.

NY state opens your options up, but NYC narrows them badly until Kniferights wins their lawsuit.

"Not all of New York is NYC"

No, it ain't. But I just know that when I get off the train in the bg apple, I act like I'm downtown Moscow, and I get by just fine. To prowl the concrete canons is a different kind of trip. I didn't know if the OP was talking about the state or the city, so I gave him a worst case senerio. :D

I lived in Manhattan for the past 10 years and just moved to AZ about 4 months ago (yes I am in firearm heaven).

I carried a Spyderco Delica religiously for the past 5 years and never had any issues. It is a lockback, under 3" and cannot be flicked open with one hand. Further, in NYC you cannot have the clip exposed as the entire knife must be concealed - carried it at the bottom of my right front pocket. I have gone through security at court houses and the WTC memorial with my Delica and it was never once a problem.

AS with fixed blades - YES YOU CAN CARRY THEM. As long as they are under 3" not double-edged and concealed, it is a non-issue. I always kept an ESEE3 in my EDC bag and had my bags searched a few times at random subway stations. It was never an issue. I have also carried an ESEE Izula in my pocket with no issues.

I would stay away from Benchmades with the axis lock as a cop MAY consider that a gravity knife as it can be flicked open. If you really want to be safe, carry a SAK or leatherman.

Realistically, carry what you like and dont give the cops a reason to search you. Even with a SAK, you may get a dick cop who just wants to be an a-hole and give you problems.
