of let the ribbing begin...

Even though I am a farily expereinced shooter, I'm lookng for a book or books on proper technique for use in shooting a scoped target/varmint style rifle from a bench or prone.

I am looking for said info so that I can
  • increase my own knowlege and possibly identify and correct any bad habits i may have picked up in the past 20 years that are having a negative effect on my own shooting
  • have an outside source of info, etc to rely upon while introducing my wife to shooting said types of rifle (as an early Birthday/xmas gift I bought her a Savage 12FCV)

It has been over a decade since i had easy access to any of the resources (both written material and [mainly] persons) that helped me along when i was first learning to shoot a rifle past the standard 100yrds. for most of that time i have been unable to maintain any kind of regular practice schedule and my skills have frankly atrophied.

lacking contact with the other shooters that I used as resources, moving half-way accross America does that, I'd kind of like to have at least some form of reliable written reference/instructional materials.

thank you for your time and any info you care to share.

I would definitely recommend Appleseed for brushing up on the fundamentals. Appleseed is all based around sling-supported shooting, mostly from prone. However, all of the fundamentals like the 6 steps to firing the shot, the principles of what makes a solid position, cheek weld, turkey neck, trigger control, breath control, natural point of aim, inches/minutes/clicks, all that stuff can be applied to any position, including a bench, bipod, or solid rest. Ultimately, it is all about building the most solid and consistent platform you can for the rifle. Keep your fundamentals strong, and you will be able to do that with whatever materials you have available (including just your body if that's all you have). Some of the youtube videos from long range precision classes might give you some ideas on different positions to try. There are tons of different precision rifle techniques out there, all of them good for different situations.

Not a book, but the Magpul Precision Rifle DVD was awesome and educational.

Appleseed is good too, but they won't teach shooting off bags or a bipod (they teach prone using a sling, and good trigger control tho).

The Ultimate Sniper by Major John L. Plaster is a training manual for military snipers and has a wealth of information about proper shooting technique in general. It is published by Paladin Press and the ISBN number is 978-1-58160-494-8. I think I paid around $20 for mine at a used book store.

any other suggestions.

I am on the lookout for a low(er) cost example of one fo the more recent editions of Ultimate Sniper. Having flipped through a copy a few years back, I refuse to pay more than $25 for it...

anyway just sending this one around one more time to see if anyone else has additional suggestions.

thanks for the input so far :)

+1 The Art of the Rifle

It's not a high tech sniper manual, but if you don't have The Art of the Rifle by Jeff Cooper you should add it to your shelf.
