Just swapped the XR3 frame on my new to me 30 Carbine black hawk for a stainless SBH Dragoon frame and wanted to show it off.
This was a used frame i got cheap off gunbroker, so it was already fit to a different gun. As it is all the holes lined up, but the edges of the frame are a little proud on the right side.
The grips are off my buddies SBH Hunter, but ive got a set of black swirly things with red ruger medallion on the way....it'll match my Wrangler in that aspect.

Only work i did on the frame was media blasting it to gray, since i much prefer that to polished stainless. I may file the right side to match and re-blast eventually, but im not sure i care that much about the slight mismatch.

I much prefer the extra length of the SBH frame. I cant stand tucking my pinky under, even on the wrangler, which i may swap to an sbh frame also if i can.

Congratulations, excellent work! I am not big fan of two tone revolver, but this combination with grey blasted finish of stainless grip frame looks quite nice. And SBH grip frame is for me far better than standard Blackhawk frame.

Also, revolver with SBH grip frame with square trigger guard has a such classy look, and I was thinking about installing it on my SS Ruger Old Army. I was told that installing grip from Old Model SBH on ROA army is pretty much straightforward. However, I doubt that stainless steel grip frame for OM SBH ever existed, and I am afraid that installing grip frame from NM SBH couldn't be done without extensive rework on a grip frame.

I like the way it looks except for the plywood grips and you have that covered. I really like the SBH grip frame but think it might be a too much on the Wrangler although it might be a help if you have really large hands. I really do not like tucking my pinky under any grip.

I put a brass after market SBH frame on my Old Army which I think improved it's looks and know it improved it's shootability (is that even a word) just like it does the SBH. I have shot a 44 mag with a standard BlackHawk grip frame and found it a very unpleasant experience. Never, ever, again.

"Driveability" is a thing in the car world (they even teach whole classes on it), so I think "shootability" should be good to go as well. :D

I did something similar with my.357-finally! ;)

Feels much better and I actually shoot ok with them. I chose slim Rosewood grips from Altamont.

Thanks guys!

Looks awesome Ke! Did you get a chance to shoot it yet?
Nope not yet! Hopefully I'll actually have a range day (as opposed to playing with my guns in the garage) here soon. Ive got ammo all loaded up and ready to go, just need to find time.

it might be a too much on the Wrangler

It might be, I really like the proportions of my Wrangler.
I may mock this frame up on it and if its too goofy looking ill probably sell the Wrangler and get a different .22 revolver.

Thats a good set up right there! I have Altmonts on my 44SBH and really like the way they feel.

Nice!
I like the SBH grip frame too. I also like the SBH hammer. The spur is easier to reach and just feels better.
Reminds me I have a spare SBH hammer I was going to install on a Vaquero and try some extended grips in ths xr3 frame. Looking at these.

I would like some walnut though.

These might be simpler for your Wrangler.

Too many projects..

An sbh hammer is on my midway list for the next time i order lol.

I looked at the texas grips also before going with the frame swap. I got the frame cheap otherwise Id have probably tried them lol.

I have a set of checkered herret target grips for the XR3-red frames if youd like them. I can post pictures later.

Looks good @LoonWulf

I really didn’t like the grip feel of my New Vaquero so I ordered and installed a Blackhawk/Vaquero (original) grip frame. I like it so much better, though I haven’t finished it off yet. The ears still stick above the frame and the butt needs reshaping. I was going to polish it but the slight roughness seems to help my grip. Also, because of the geometry of the grip, frame and hammer spring strut I ended up with a 23 pound hammer spring after trying 17, 18, 19 and 21 pound springs. The lighter springs wouldn’t reliably set off primers. But the trigger pull is great.
Here are a couple crappy photos of it. When I finish off the frame I will take better shots.

Shot both the .44 and the .30 carbine today....MAN is that 30 loud.......I dont know if I've ever fired anything that obnoxious that didn't have a muzzle brake lol.

Shot great tho, nearly no recoil, plenty of oomph. I REALLY like the way it feels in hand with the SBH frame. I didnt have any issues with it setting off the SRMP im using to load the Carbine rounds either.

A few years back a guy at the indoor range I belonged to had a 30 Carbine Blackhawk. He fired that thing and got the attention of all the range staff at the counter and everyone in the range that day. I would say it was noisier than a .44 Magnum. It didn’t have that thump of concussion, but it was a very loud “crack” each time he pulled the trigger.

How did you find the accuracy of the .30 C as compared to the .44?
