My father-in-law (awesome guy) just gave me a few of his old guns and there was a Ruger Super Blackhawk in the box. It has a 7.5 inch barrel and the serial number dates it to 1986. I wanted to get a new set of grips for this revolver, but I got really confused when I searched for them.

It seems the majority of the 7.5 inch guns had a Dragoon-style square trigger guard, but this one has a round guard. I started doing some reading about the various grip frames out there (XR3, XR3 RED, SBH, etc.) and got really confused. For what it's worth, I don't think this is a Hunter model. The frame says NEW Super Blackhawk or something like that. I have posted some pictures below to help.

Anyway, I guess my question is whether I need grips for the Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk with square trigger guard, or something else? Thanks!

Look into "bisley" grips. I am not positive and maybe someone else can chime in, but I think you have a Bisley model Blackhawk, which has different grips altogether fromt the standard blackhawk and super blackhawk

It's a Bisley for sure. There's a lot of variation among Bisley grip frames and I would recommend having grips fitted to your grip frame. CLC will fix you up!

I am glad you mentioned that. I love Ruger SAs and have a thing for grips and always switch them out. I have never had a Bisley, but I plan on getting one (or several) eventually. I even looked at one today at a flea market that I posted aboout in another thread.

I did not know about the trouble with them fitting, but that will explain why you do not see very many higher end grip makers offering them for sale.

Thanks

Definitely Bisley grips frame...

What caliber?

Super Blackhawk would be .44 and unfluted cylinder...I do believe there is/was one model SBH with a fluted cylinder, but it has a 5.5" barrel and XR3-RED grip frame...

ADDING:

Color me unstunned *rolleyes*

One thing you learn about Ruger SA's is never say never...

It seems you have a rare one...The first some hundreds of Bisley SBH's came with fluted cylinders, so hang on to that, and you may want to research value before shooting, especially if you have the box and papers:

I am brain dead. Later Bisley's all have the unfluted, rollmarked cylinder, regardless of chambering. This one is an earlier fluted cylinder model and tends to carry a premium with collectors and 'some' shooters.

Thanks a ton for the responses guys! Yes, it is indeed a .44 Mag and I should have mentioned that fact. I hadn't considered that it could be a Bisley and I'm glad I asked for some help. It's also interesting that this is an uncommon variant of the Blackhawk with fluted cylinders. I read the thread from the Ruger forum that was linked (and the threads that it linked), and I really appreciate the additional information. They specifically mention 1986 being the production year, which matches the serial number I found.

Anyway, I don't intend to sell this gun so any added value isn't a big concern. I will likely tell my father-in-law about the unique aspects of this revolver in case he may want it back though! To be honest, it probably isn't the best candidate for a serious collector. He didn't have the original box or paperwork, and the gun has been fired at least some because I cleaned some junk out of it. Also, a couple small rust spots have developed due to improper storage. (The storage issue is actually how I ended up with most of his small collection.)

Thanks again for the help! :)

You might check out Altamont for grips. I put a set of Rosewood grips on my Bisley:

They are very fine quality and inexpensive to boot ($38.00).

I already have checked out Altamont! I have a set of their grips on my snubbie and I love them. They were the first place I looked. Thanks for the tip though.

Big fan of Altamont. Got a pair of Colt 1911 grips. Maybe the best grips, dollar for dollar (IMHO)
