I went to 5 local guns stores (LGS) today. Two LGS in NJ told me they have stopped selling powder, primers, bullets and brass and they do not plan on ordering more inventory in the future when the supply shortage ends.. They stated that they are done selling reloading supplies that they claim do not make money for the shops.

Two of the other LGS in NY have no powder or primers. One LGS in NY had one pound of Blue Dot powder and a few packages of 1,000 Remington SPPs. The prices were $29 and $57 for the powder and primers, respectively.

I bought the Blue Dot for $29, but I could not pay $57 for the Remington SPP.

Since those two states in particular have proposed - or passed - some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country, it's understandable why they're still behind the supply curve.

The guys in NJ told me that there have been no new NJ laws on purchases of primers and powder....just buy them and take them home.

In NY, the new SAFE Act will require a background check for the purchase of ammo (e.g., the ammo purchase registry) after 12/31/13. Apparently, NY state has not funded the background info system so it is unlikely to go into effect on 1/1/14. It is unclear if the ammo purchase registry was intended to cover reloading supplies like powder and primers.

Please don't confuse NY City with the rest of the state. In Western NY supplies are starting to show up. Small pistol primers are available, although a shop may have only one brand and limit your quantity to 1000 or 2000. Ammo is back, I hear, but 9mm is still scarce.

It's a pet peeve, but whenever someone uses "NY" it's often meant to be New York City (because the inhabitants think the state ends at the George Washington Bridge) while non-New Yorkers take it to mean the whole state. The farther you get from the city, the more relaxed people are about guns and the easier it is to get a permit.

Having said that, the SAFE Act sucks and will screw the whole state because NYC politicians run the state.

I was at Cabela's in PA last Friday morning at 10 Am and picked up two 100 rd boxes of 22lr Cci Minimags and saw that they had a ton of powder and primers, as well as bullets. The guy said the 22 would likely be gone in a few hours but they had a couple hundred boxes when I was there. this is 3 hours from where I live in NJ, by NYC and probably one of the farthest drives to Cabela's. That's not too bad for supply in this area if it came down to it and you bought in bulk in one trip.

To be honest, when the store treated me like an adult, in regards to looking at ammo on the shelf and carrying it to register and buying it without ID, and handling long guns on racks in the store, etc, I pretty much decided I'm done buying in NJ as much as possible.

I have a LGS here in OH that said the same thing. Now I don’t buy anything from them anymore.

I also shop Online at Powder Valley and they have virtually NOTHING in stock. No powders, no powder. The should re-name the store Powder-less Valley.

Seriously??? Powder valley has been getting stock in on a regular basis for months - it isnt their fault it sells out.
