How much louder is .40 S&W compared to a 9mm when suppressed with an AAC Evolution? Also, are there any other good .40 S&W suppressors apart from AAC?

I'm considering suppressing a .40 S&W H&K USP but if 9mm is significantly quieter, I may change direction on that decision.

Thanks.

I wonder if anyone makes a suppressor for the .17. That could be very quiet.

Not that I'm aware of, but I did see one for the FiveSeveN. That would be an interesting gun to suppress. Seriously high dollar investment given the price of the gun, the suppressor and the tax, though!

40 S&W makes a better suppressed weapon than 9mm because you want sub sonic and that limits velocity to under 1000fps. In 9mm you are limited to around 147 grains bullet weight whereas the .40 could be used with as much as a 200gr bullet. Both remember have to stay sub sonic so the heavier bullet is preferred. This is why the .45acp works so well suppressed, heavy bullets and sub sonic.

That must be the new joint strike firearm I've been hearing about... ;)

Also, you might be talking about the AAC Five Seven, 5.72mm supressor, which you can get for about $650 - not expensive at all.

I'm not sure where you got your information but supression wise worst to best is 45acp, 40, 9mm

yes 45acp is inherently subsonic HOWEVER supersonic 9mm is still quieter.

There is currently NO hearing safe (dry) 45acp can
Every current 9mm can is hearing safe (even w/ supersonic ammo)

it's all about bore size and a 9mm can has a smaller bore

My 40 can is louder than my 9mm can when both use subsonic ammo.

My 9mm can is pretty damn loud using supersonics, how loud depends on what the target and where I shoot (mostly due to reflections from ground, walls, trees). It is loud enough that I never bother sending anything but subsonic 147gr ammo through my 9mm can. Supersonic through a 9mm can is a waste of my time and requires I use ear plugs.

If I had to get only 1, I would get the 9mm from a reputable manufacturer that meters well and I would only run 147gr ammo through it. Mine sounds like a nail gun to the shooter.

Now my wife's 22 pistol + can sounds like a cat sneezing. :D

Saw a 17 silencer at the shop the other day, think it was by gemtech. I doubt it would do much though, because of the supersonic speed of the bullet. 10 months later and still waiting on my 40 can.
