Suppressing the 35 Remington

I found another K.KALE Mauser action that I'd like to do something different with.

Having seen the suppressed Remington Model 7 in 300 AAC in this video, I'm interested in the idea of a handy suppressed carbine throwing a bigger pill. The 35 Rem keeps to very mild pressures (~33k, SAAMI) with factory ammunition, in the same ballpark as 9x19mm. Does anyone have experience using a 9mm suppressor with a rifle cartridge? I'm thinking of a 16" threaded barrel, but a fast attach option would be great.

I'd like opinions on a few aspects of the project:

• 35 Rem loads, from subsonic plinkers to Buffalobore stout.
• 9mm suppressor choices for rifle applications.
• Barrel options, from .35 caliber blanks, take-offs, or ideally a SR Mauser barrel.
• Thoughts on optics?

The machine work isn't a problem, but I will need headspace gauges and a finish reamer.

Anything I'm forgetting?

I don't know if a pistol supressor would handle a rifle load of the same caliber.
It's not the pressure, it is the volume, you would be handling 30-40 grains of powder gas instead of 5-10.
I don't know but you need to.

Thanks Jim. I've been mulling the same thought about powder volume. It would seem that a can would need correspondingly larger volume to function. At the same time, .308 cans aren't huge, and the operate at higher pressures.

Like you said, I don't know.

Hopefully someone will be along to educate me.

EDIT:
There are some light loads with pistol powders mentioned in this thread at Castboolets. Can anyone comment on the performance of a load like this through a suppressor?

Running numbers in QuickLoad, a 124gr from a 5" 9mm has about 7 grains of powder and 5000 psi at the muzzle.

For a subsonic load:

.35 Remington shooting a 180gr at 1100 fps has about 20 grains of powder and roughly 2500 psi at the muzzle (16" bbl).

For a supersonic load:

180gr at 2200 fps, 38-45 gr powder, muzzle pressure approx 9000 psi.


My estimate would be "OK" in 9mm can for subsonic, not ok with full power loads. The suppressor manufacturer would be able to tell you if they'll warranty it or not.

Can you point me in the direction of a suppressor manufacturer that makes something in 9mm suitable for my purposes?

For subsonic, just about any that make 9mm pistol suppressors - though contact them to make sure they are on board with your application. You would not need a linear decoupler (Nielsen device) unless you want to also use the suppressor on a tilt-barrel pistol.

If you want to shoot full power ammunition, I would recommend a suppressor designed for centerfire rifle. If I were going to make one for that application, I would probably take a .30 caliber suppressor and use a larger bore diameter (since powder weight is similar to .308).
