I'm thinking about buying a couple suppressors from AAC, and am a little confused on the $200 tax. Do I have to fill out and get approved a form 4 AND pay $200 for each suppressor I buy? Or is it I fill out and get approved 1 form 4, pay $200 once, and am good to go on as many suppressors as I want?

I have three, the Pilot, Evolution 9, and an older Scorpion. All function beautifully, and show nice worksmanship & design. I use the Scorpion on a Browning Hi Power, the Evo-9 on a Walther P99, and the Pilot on a Beretta 75 .22. I am very satified with the function and sound suppression. $200 extra on any sound suppressor is a lot less expensive than hiring a lawyer to get you out of a fix with the BATF. Totally worth it. Buy them while you can............no one is trying to ban suppressor...yet.......

SharpsDressedMan,

I was thinking about buying a supperssor for a handgun.

I wanted to get a suppressor and threaded barrel for one of my 1911's, but when I started reading about it, it seems that .45's don't suppress all that well, both from a sound and reliability standpoint.

The hi-power, which you have, is a gun that seems to be specifically referenced time and time again as a 9mm that supressess well(sound) and actually works with a supressor on it, that is, the slide functions correctly and reliably.

Any comments?

Glock 19s seem to suppress well. Haven't yet tried a 1911, as I have heard the same thing. Just sent off the form 4 for a Gemtech Tundra.

Typically, no. The BATFE has ruled that even a single extra baffle is a suppressor.

I hope an expert comes along to confirm this or educate me otherwise.

No. Those "guts" constitute a suppressor according to the ATF so you'll need another Form 1 or 4 plus $200. Most guys will just buy a .308 can and shoot the smaller calibers through it. Maybe 2-3 dB louder than a caliber designated suppressor but if you're cheap, that's the way to go.

The .45 is subsonic but won't suppress as easily as the smaller cartridges like the .22 and 9mm. Smaller holes, less gas, quieter suppression.

My friend has a 1911 suppressed, and it is just fine. Shooting with no ear protection is great. I've got a .22 suppressor, and my next one will be for the AR.

That is going to depend on which gun and suppressor actually. 45 ACP starts out subsonic so there is that factor. You will have more noise than say a 9mm, just due to the bore size.
1911's can be tricky due to getting the slide cycling properly with the extra weight on it. Most 45 suppressors will have a booster to assist with this.
I have a HK Tactical with a CCF Impuls II and I can shoot it without hearing protection when it is shot wet. Dry there is a more noticable "pop" to it. However it has been 100% reliable for me. In fact, due to the tall sights I am actually much more accurate with it when I shoot it suppressed.

For the .45 Government, best results will be with a piston assisted (called a Nielson device) suppressor like the AAC Evolution .45, or the HEMS. Both are very good, but they won't be as quiet as a 9mm, as others have mentioned. AAC's are able to be changed out so that they can go on different types of threading, hence use on a 1911 and a SIG or HK. Some other brands don't offer this, such as the Gemtech Blackside, which down not use a a piston, but is very light, and works most of the time on most guns (guns can be fickle. They may need lower pound springs, or be slicked up/broken in well). I have heard the Blackside on an HK USP-T, and it worked and sounded good. I have an older AWC Nexus on a 1911, but the can is too heavy, and AWC charges too much for adapters to other barrels/guns/threading. The HEMS has a good reputation for sound suppression on a .45, but I have no hands on experience. I wouldn't mind a Blackside...smalller and lighter than the piston assisted cans. Check out youtube for some videos on suppressor of various types.
