Surprise (to me) - The Cost of .22 Ammo Has Gone Down ?

Something tells me that in another 12-18 months 22lr ammo is going to be as plentiful as 223/5.56. Everyone I know who shoots has enough to last them through the next great depression and most people on threads talk about the quantities of bricks they've managed to store up on.

I personally have a dozen bricks in the safe and have no need for more.

Since the fall of 2012, neither of the two local Walmarts have had .22 ammo (with ONE exception) during my numerous visits.

In late May, Gander Mt. opened a store less than 5 miles from these two stores. During the opening, Gander had Winchester bulk in 3 quantities - 555 for $34.99; 333 for $22.99; and 222 for $12.99. That comes out to $0.063, $0.069, and $0.067 per round. They also had Remington LRN for $34.99/500 ($0.07).

Remember that "exception" above? In mid-July, one of the Walmarts had the same Winchester bulk 222s for only $10.97 ($0.049/rd.).

A LGS had 1400 rd. buckets of Remington "Golden" ammo in late August for $95.00 ! Two years ago, they were selling it for only $65 !!

Prices aren't really coming down YET. It's just that the availability has improved somewhat.

I keep hoping Walmart will stop carrying the bulk and place a limit on the 50 ct boxes. Not gonna happen but I can hope.
I am still seeing plenty of 22 LR at local stores other than Wally World. It is generally higher priced than I will pay since I have plenty on hand but it IS available. I guarantee that I could visit three stores locally and come home with 20k rounds of 22 ammo if I had the money to pay for it. Both Academy and Gander have had plenty for the past 2-3 months in Alabama and Georgia. I have not bought a single round.

It is just supply and demand at work. The places that price the ammo a little higher than it used to be have it in stock. The places that price it real cheap sell out. Not hard to understand. I am just not sure how many of the buyers of the cheaper ammo are just reselling it.
