You have to be careful with any spots, get them checked! A friend of mine's life was probably saved when she turned her ankle and the ER doc saw a spot on the back of her calf that turned out to be melanoma. They took a scary big chunk of her calf off, and in 30+ years, she's had no further issues. Her husband and she check each other over about every 3 months, and anything newly discovered or changed gets checked out.
I'm 57 and have had two "spots" removed. One on my right temple, and one on my left arm. Neither were cancerous, but both were located in places where I had been "smoked", AKA really badly sunburned years earlier. I had what appeared to be a "keloid" on my left cheek for years, it never got any bigger, but it did itch. Several doctors said to "leave it alone", unless it took off, and then some kind of laser would be used to try to remove it. One night, I scratched it really badly in my sleep, and a hunk of it came off! It wasn't a keloid at all, and within a half hour, I had removed it (About quarter sized), and the only evidence it was there was a tiny bleeding spot about the size of a pencil lead. The doctors were totally puzzled by what it was. Over two years later, nothing has come back, and I have a tiny dot of a scar there.
