Surprising CNN article

Damn, that's gotta be a sign of the apocalypse. CNN running a pro gun article?

Surely the world WILL end tomorrow now.

The pendulum will swing in the other direction, given enough time. Long-term trends have been in favor of gun owners. The trick is to stall for time, until emotions have cooled. That has to be the NRA's strategy. Drag it out as long as possible.

Well, don't believe the hype. This is CNN's version of trotting out the "we show both sides, honest!" fair play journalism. They use Bill Bennett as a token so it appears that they are non-biased and viewpoints are equally shared. Now, it would be an entirely different animal if one of CNN's liberal types wrote an article where they had a change of heart. That would be something.

So true, they have to have the obligatory pro gun article, to appear un bias. Horse feathers I say!

Horse feathers indeed.
To clarify, I didn't mean any disrespect to Mr. Bennett because I do think he is a good man. It's just easy for the average CNN reader/zombie to see the article and say "wasn't that the guy that worked for Reagan and Bush senior? Well forget him."
Their use of his by-line is as much a warning to their reader as anything else. It would be like seeing a thread on The High Road by Mayor Bloomberg titled "My Favorite Caliber."

I would respectfully suggest that any reasoned and coherent news coverage that is not blatantly anti, is good for us. I'll take anything we can get.

At least it is an attempt to appear un-biased and show both sides of the story. For that, CNN gets some credit.

Slate on the other hand, doesn't even make this attempt. If you want to read some garbage go there! Although I hate to give them any more page views, maybe some educated people can chime in on the comments.

Bill Bennett is responsible voice and a person that I don't think has a tremendous bias toward or against guns and private citizens. He volunteered to participate in any commission that the President might start up to study the issue. However, at this point, I don't think the President is interested in "studying" the issue.

CNN seems to be making an effort to have a more balanced approach to their news coverage and discussions. Although I don't watch CNN frequently, they seem to be changing. That change has everything to do with Fox News (money and ratings) and I think little to do with CNN management wanting to present a balanced view or analysis.

Since their ratings are in the toilet anyway, it would be nice if CNN could focus on news rather than all this news-entertainment crap. I find Fox and MSNBC to be flat out unwatchable.

My thoughts exactly. It's not like they have anything to lose...

That seems to be their only pro-gun article, though.

I like this one they're running: http://us.cnn.com/2012/12/20/opinion/waldman-guns-manhood/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

Well, that article is calling out this Bushmaster ad campaign:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/scott/bushmasters-shockingly-awful-man-card-campaign

If you're going to publish an ad campaign that's that stupid, expect to get called out on it if someone uses your product in a mass murder of schoolchildren.

I'm not excited. Facts and reason make no difference to an anti-gunner. It's all about emotion. Which is why so many change their spots after they're mugged or raped.

Good to see that this article got published. What irks me is that the editor had to make a note about the author's background. Perhaps it is an attempt toimply bias, perhaps not, but maybe they should start attaching other people's credentials to their articles. The other thing that irks me is that it was published as an editorial. Is that CNN's way of saying they covered both sides but being able to say they or their writers never endorsed carry in schools?

This. I happened to turn on Eliot Spitzer on MSN and he kept calling bushmaster rifles, "murder weapons". Saying they produce "murder weapons"... Made me furious, there is no journalistic integrity left in mainstream media.

I wish we could get rid of this news entertainment garbage. It's a sad state of things when I get excited to see a news article that is mostly devoid of opinion.

I see Johnny beat me to it. I have this hangup about wanting my national leaders and journalists to have personal integrity. Spitzer has absolutely none.
