I made this a small while ago but thought i'de post it.

What i started with was this http://www.buymilitaria.com/e_german_html/german_canteen_used.htm

I cut off the top half of the actual aluminum canteen so that it was as tall as the lower portion of the hard cover. This way i could heat water for oatmeal and tea.

After that i added
- 4 pouches of instant oatmeal (fits in the upper green cup portion) in a ziploc
- An altoids tin with 12 round hexamine fuel tabs and a cotton ball or two for padding
- A smaller tin labeled 'Thinnie Tinnie Myntz! Low carb!" which has a strip of 10 "Chlor Floc" water purification tablets in it. (Probably make about 20 of the tin cups worth)
- A pack of 50 waterproof matches.
- Some green tea in a ziploc with several sugar packets.

What y'all think?

makes for a convienent source of hot food and clean water.

War Dog,

Sounds like a nice kit. I am unclear on one point though. If I read your description right (it is entirely possible that I am missinterpreting it), you cut off the top of the canteen itself? How do you then carry water?

I have one of these units that I bought many years ago. It certainly is sturdy. The Germans seem to have a thing about a cup on top of the canteen. Maybe they don't drink out of the canteen directly like many Americans. The carriers that I have for various canteens seem to be designed so it is not easy to remove the canteen. That may be the reason for the 'convenient' cup.

Yeah, that seems to be the case. :scrutiny:

It is a convienent add on in some occasions.

In any case, the purpose of cutting the canteen is so you can use the space inside for all the good things :) And i carry water in a plastic 1 liter.

To be more precise, the purpose of this is to have a way to make hot food and drink in case you get lost. Its much more of a luxury item, not essential, but i think it would be very nice to have a little hot food and drink.
