Um, what rifle round won't pierce a vest?

.177 air rifle rounds, perhaps?

Either those 2 reporters are pushing an agenda or they are totally ignorant on the subject of firearms.

What if this old boy had used a Remington 7600 in 30-06?

I suppose that UMC .30-06 says 'vest piercing' on it as well. :banghead:

I've bought dozens of guns from same shop, why didn't anyone mention the federal check that is done on site? The feds cleared him or it would not have been sold.

Nice to know I the SKS I just picked up at the gunshow this weekend is now considered a 'deadly assault rifle' - I wonder if his had the built in grenade launcher like mine does...guess they would've mentioned that if it did.

:scrutiny:

Should I email the writer?

I was thinking of sending the following letter to the writer of this article. He pissed me off so substantially I was actually dizzy. Tell me what you guys think and if I should send it. I want it to represent us all as responsible shooters.

Dear Mr. Fleischauer and Ms. Holly Hollman

It took TWO people to write that article?! Wow. We have a pair of winners here. Someone get that Pulitzer ready.

You are clearly forgetting one of the major ethical considerations of journalism. Do not become part of the story.

I quote: "On the night before Christmas, Farron Barksdale was browsing at Larry's Pistol and Pawn in Huntsville."

These sarcastic and unnecessarily playful opening lines of an article that centers on the tragic death of two police officers point to the fact that you two "journalists" are more interested in seeing your own writing in print than in relating a news story from an unbiased point of view. Next time you decide to squeeze your political agenda into one of your articles perhaps it would lend you more credibility if you appeared more sensitive to the subject matter.

If there is one thing that ticks me off more than people who use words like "deadly" and "assault rifle" for the sake of adding drama in place of actually researching their facts, it's bad writing!!

I would love to give you a lesson on the realities of firearms and the capabilities of guns and their associated ammunition. I am a Certified Pistol Safety Instructor with over thirteen years experience as a recreational shooter and collector. I offer you my services as a consultant. Feel free to email me with any firearms related questions.

By the way, the next time someone is run down by a car in your community would you please refer to the vehicle as a deadly, guard-rail piercing, projectile driven by a lunatic who purchased the car from a dealership that sells many like it as well as other "less dangerous" cars.

Respectfully,

Hey, Vern....

"Hold my beer; them two stupid reporters are back and I'm gonna sell 'em some deadly, stomach-piercing chili....

Amadeus--

That's a pretty good email. Take out the first sarcastic part:
It took TWO people to write that article?! Wow. We have a pair of winners here. Someone get that Pulitzer ready.
...and reference the article by date and headline, if not by URL, to give them a reference point, too.

Gunmonkey:

According to the media, ANY semi-auto rifle is an "assault rifle."

That's where we're going.

So I sent an email (see above) to the writers of this article. One of them responded -- twice --- anyone want to know what he said or is this thread effectively deceased?

My dialogue with the reporter.

When I got the computer this morning I found the following reply:

Thanks for the e-mail. I wrote the lede which you found to be unethical, not Holly. I expect I was the "bad writer," too.

I responded to this with:

Eric:

I appreciate your acknowledging my email. Thank you.

Journalism is a delicate yet powerful beast. It is easily disfigured and should be treated with respect and care by those granted the supreme responsibility of reporting the facts. I am relieved to see you recognize this truth.

Also, I was serious about my offer to answer firearm related questions. Feel free to contact me if you need assistance or just another source.

Best wishes,

Dialogue with reporter continued

To the above he replied:

The echo of a Christmas poem was not intended to be playful. Nor was it intended to "squeeze my political agenda" into the article. (Do you mean the anti-murder political agenda? Or is there some other agenda I unwittingly honor?) Its purpose was to contrast what sane people were thinking about on Christmas Eve against what Barksdale was thinking. How that violated "the major ethical considerations of journalism" escapes me.

Journalists do have a supreme responsibility. Those of us who understand that responsibility and strive to meet it are sometimes frustrated by sarcastic comments and disparaging remarks from people who have read only one of our articles, and who have not read that one carefully. I sincerely appreciate your offer of assistance. Especially on facts relating to guns, I need assistance. Happily, others with expertise in the area managed to offer help without simultaneously taking cheap shots.

I have pasted your original comments below in the hopes that you will review them before issuing more insults.

Eric

WildAlaska:

A valid point and one I am very aware of.

I am trying to fashion my response to avoid further insult without backing down on my (our) pro-2A position.
