2 Athens Police Officers Shot and Killed (breaking news)

Police have confirmed 2 Athens police officers have been shot on Horton Street in Athens. Both officers died on the scene.

Police have released the name of one of the victims. 41 year old Sgt. Larry Russell died after being shot by 30 year old Farron Barksdale. Sgt. Russell leaves behind his wife Michelle, and five children. The name of the second police officer killed on Friday will not be released until his family can be notified.

The shooting happened just after 1 o'clock Friday afternoon at Farron Barksdale's home on Horton Street in Athens. Police say Barksdale called police asking for an officer. Upon arrival, police say Barksdale began shooting at the officers from inside the house.

After the shooting, neighbors say Farron Barksdale laid down in the middle of Horton Street. Two witnesses then subdued him until other officers arrived. He is now in custody.

Someone should have ran over him. :fire:

May the Angels watch over the families and friends of the LEOs.

And it's a DA$% shame that cowardly dastard didn't have a fatal accident while being subdued.:fire:

I wonder if the neighbors that subdued him were using guns? And if so, why didn't the article say so?

BTW, That's a rhetorical question, that second one.

Sad. I hope the families are doing well. And that the expletive deleted unmentionable is hanged.

The second officer in this incident was 15 year veteran
Tony Mims; also of the Athens, AL police department.

GOD speed to these fine officer's; and I extend my
deepest sympathy and condolences to their family's.

Respectfully,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

CZ 75 BD thanks for the update. This a perfect example of the nature of the job of an LEO. You never know who you are dealing with, and just being an LEO makes you a target for people you have never met, who don't know you, and just might decide that you (ie: an LEO) need to die.
The next time you think an Officer looks a little jumpy or is a little to paranoid, just remember that he knows about incidents like this, and he still has to respond to calls like this. Everyday calls that may be routine as can be, until the one day when it's not.
