I live next to wilderness and my requirements are different than most. I have three Colt 1911s (2/45 and 1/38Super) and two 686s, round count is way into the thousands.

I didn't vote because all three calibers have had a lot of night stand time. Given my locale and the wild critters that live here, I've gone to 10mm with rail, custom 1911 other than Colt. I also have a scandium PC Smith in 357mag that is top/bottom rail capable, but it's not what the OP asked. :)

Both are great, but I would go with the 1911. That is what I carry and keep next to my bed. My wife can shoot and handle my 1911s (Colt and Kimber) too.

I keep both in the nightstand, my 1911 works for bumps in the nite. My 686 matches caliber with the rifle under the bed, for the bumps in the nite that have four legs.

4" 586 is my #1 go-to Combat Pistol, I have owned a few 1911s over the years, Colt, Springfield, and ParaOrd. None of these were as dead reliable or as accurate out of the box as my wheelguns.
