Hello all. I have an SW40VE (one with the black slide). I have only used it a few times and I've always taken time to clean the barrel and lube the rails but haven't done much to the slide. I noticed recently that there is a bit of rust at the cerated area and a few rust specs on top of the slide up near the front of the barrel. I did my best to clean it really well and loaded it with the gun lube/oil I picked up from Wal-mart.

What can I do about this? More specifically, I'm planning on selling it to upgrade and I figure this little bit of rust will hurt resale value. How do I repair it and keep it from happening in the future?

If you need pictures I can post some tomorrow.

Any metal will rush when something corrosive is on it; water, fingerprints, a bit of solvent, sweat, blood, etc.. will all rust a gun if given time. Where you say it is rusting (Muzzle end of slide, gripping serrations, etc) is consistent with a bit of solvent being left on the slide after cleaning.

Other than one gun I left for too long in a leather holster and wore some blue off, and a Sig 226 that had the slide finish wear off after years in the holster; I have been lucky enough to keep all of my other blued guns rust free by really wiping the exteriors down with a decent oil after every handling or use.

When moving them about in the safes (to get at ones in the back, etc) I put my hand in an oil-impregnated sock to handle those I am not taking to the range to keep fingerprints off of them as well. It may be overkill, but it works for me.
