I am deciding which scope mount to buy for my K-31. I'm going to be mounting a 3x9x40 Leupold scope. I shoot irons normally, so what would be the best set-up for rings and mount? I'm fairly set on a clamp on mount as I don't want to permanently alter the rifle. I was looking on brownell's and they have a aluminum and steel clamp on mount but for some reason the steel mount is 50 dollars more. Anyone know why? which one is better? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have heard nothing but good about the St. Marie's mount from the guys on the surplusrifle forums.

I have the St Marie mount in Aluminun and it is fine. It is the one also made in steel but I would not pay the price.

I use and aluminum accumount clampon mount- its rock solid.

Get good rings- the dovetail on K31 mounts are sized for rimfire rings. A tall set of Burris steel rimfire rings willl give you enough scope clearance and will be solid. Don't mess with aluminum rimfire rings, they just aren't sturdy enough to hold up to the recoil.

I have the clamp on mount as well. So far it has been 100%.

I have had no complaints with the mount itself.

I did discover one issue with mounting a scope however.
When I first put the scope on, it worked fine.

I then repositioned the rings on the mount, and did not pay attention to the placement. I had positioned one of the rings over the ejection port. Upon ejection, the empty shell would fly straight up, hit the ring and bounce back into the rifle.
I would then have to manually remove the spent shell.

It took me a few shots to realize this was due to the shell hitting the ring.

After I moved the ring forward of the ejection port, all was well.
