I've already got pump shotguns and am intrigued by the SxS coach shotgun. Found a Stoeger for $300 in nice shape. It's got a short but legal barrel. It's a very sexy gun, but is it really "useful" for much.

Keeping in mind that I have a lot of guns that aren't really "useful" for much other than collecting and target shooting.

Just the same, sell me on the merits of the SxS.

I like them and plan on purchasing one soon because they are cheap, and i can throw it under the backseat of my truck and not worry about it. i can throw in a box of bird, buck, slugs, flares. It will eat everything and never throw a fit.

You asked what are the Merits of a SXS? I'd say the gun your looking at doesnt have many. A coach gun ,had it's usefulness on top of a stage coach. I dont know of any still in regular use. Please dont confuse a hollywood coach gun to the gun that exemplifies true upland bird hunting .

To put them both in the same class is like comparing a toothpick to an oak tree.

A quote from Brister on the topic:
"Although the narrow sighting plane of the over-under is most precise against a clear background, it can be easy to lose against the background of brush in which so much upland game shooting is done. That could be why the O/U is so popular with target games (all of which have or should have a reasonable good background) while the double with its wider, more visible sighting plane is often preferred by hunters in heavy cover."

Ive recently considered buying a stoeger coach gun myself.. either that or the over/under outback model. As fat as merits.. I honestly can't think of a single thing that another shotgun can't do better. So why buy one ? Well, I don't know.. they look cool and I want one, isn't that enough ? If it makes you happy, it's worth it.

I bought a CZ Hammer Coach (12 ga) on a "whim" . . . since then it's become a fav thick cover grouse gun . . . makes it tuff on ruffs . . .

Merits?

1) Simplicity. The only thing simpler is a single shot. Easy to use, even for a non 'gun person,' as an illustration of this my sainted mother's 'house gun' for decades was a cut- down 20 ga. double barrel, a 311 with Sears' name on it. She now has a Beretta CX4 Storm carbine in 9mm, as the shotgun's recoil finally got to be more than she could handle. But the little double worked for her until she was 79.

2) Safety. Carry it broken open and empty and all the world can see that gun is safe. Easiest off all designs to clear and reload is the break-open gun, in the field when crossing fences and other obstacles this gets to be a big advantage after a while.

3) Practicality. Two shots is plenty for sporting situations. And a proper double gives you a choice of two chokes instantly as needed for different ranges. It's essentially two guns side by side. And it's useful in "social work" as well.

4) Tradition. It's just "right" to hunt birds with a SXS. Your elders will approve, your mentors will feel the time they invested in you was not wasted.

5) Classic- there is no more beautiful shotgun than a good SXS. It doesn't have to be a bespoke London gun either.

So what are you waiting for?

What Hawk and Lee said.

To which I'll add : Your eyes are "OO" not "8"

Yep, I want a SxS in 20 bore, with fixed choke and double triggers for an everything gun.

Then again I "would have to have" all 4 gauges, especially a 28 gauge.
:)

This would be an "upgrade" for me, as I currently use a single shot for most things now-a-days anyway...

Pigs in the thick

I want a 12 ga coach gun to hunt pigs in very very thick brush and briars. Way cool with some old school 2 3/4 00 buck. I have a few places that are shotgun only and it is almost like flushing quail when you jump a bunch of pigs up close.
Also like some one else said it is a good truck gun that will eat anything I feed it.

I saw this and thought it was ahhhh interesting if nothing else.

I like the sling but the sights look un-natural.
