I am wanting to buy a new shotgun. I want a sxs 12ga, single trigger, ejectors, interchangable chokes, and a straight english style grip. Any suggestions?

What is your budget? Do you what a short barreled coach gun or longer barrel? A quality Beretta sxs costs over $3,000 but a lower quality Stoeger costs $400.

I would like an all around upland bird gun. I have found I am a much better shooter with a straight grip gun. I would like to stay around $1500.

Hmm...I bought a Stoeger and love it. That said you could get 3 or 4 stoegers with 1500 bucks

And you would need 3 or 4 so you have at least one that works...... ;)

At $1500, the aforementioned Browning or SKB is about your best bet. Personally, for upland, I prefer double triggers as it gives me INSTANT choke selection. Then again I also prefer fixed chokes - something in the basic IC/M is about as good as it gets. You might find a used Ugartechea, but it will have DT and no chokes - if you are really dead set on chokes, they can always be added be any number of good folks - might add about $100 plus tubes

I shied away from DT for the longest time because my first time ever firing a gun it was with a DT SxS and being LH, I pulled both triggers at once - the pheasant was obliterated and my shoulder was sore. What a mistake not trying it again later down the road.

Mine works fine and since I got it my hit ratio on dove has improved drastically over that with my 870. My poor 870 doesn't see much action since I got the stoeger. But then again, I can't afford something like a $1500 gun.

Why should you care what I or anyone else prefers when you are spending YOUR money? I have shot double and single triggers and straight and pistol gripped guns and have not found it made any difference, other than what I liked to look at. I do like a straight grip for a lot of things but on a heavy waterfowl gun I did find a pistol grip did add some control in awkward shooting positions.
I don't see you finding what you are looking for in a new gun anywhere close to your budget. I would suggest you look for a good Browning BSS or Winchester 23 and then look at having a REPUTABLE gunsmith such as Brileys install the tubes. Can't stress that enough, as a bad tube job is really bad news, and if you plan to shoot steel a set of tubes with most of the constriction beyond the original barrel will likely be the best way to go. I have had both models, in fact of all the SxSs I have owned I have only kept the BSS Sporter with the straight grip and single trigger, and they are well built and reliable, although of the American style rather than that of the British game guns. If you found a Beretta you liked - long odds - in your budget that would be another contender. I tend to heavier loads so that was what I always preferred. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. As I said before, I have shot a lot of guns. I own several shotguns right now, Browning, Mossberg, etc. I picked up a cheap CZ 16 sxs just for something to throw around in the truck. It had a straight grip stock and I found I could hit much better with it. I then remembered years ago I shot a Winchester 9422 lever action and could hit rabbits on the run with it. Got to thinking maybe the grip had something to do with it. Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

double gun

A winchester 23 is a good suggestion. Here's one with a straight stock on gunbroker: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=303134449.

I have a 23 two barrel set with 20 and 28 gauge barrels, very nice handling gun with fixed IC/Mod chokes. If you look around for awhile you can find a very nice L.C. Smith, field or even Ideal grade in that price range. Then you are shooting history.

Let us know what you find.

The Winchester Selects shoot really well. They resell very well. Hard to find a straighter shotgun: 1.5" @ Comb & 2.375" @ Heel
