Purchased a used Remington 870 magnum with 20" barrel and rifle sights. The owner told me that the barrel was a fixed modified choke, but I do not recognize any markings on the barrel to confirm.

The right side of the barrel has "R" , a triangle with a - in the middle and REP within a capsule/circle.

The left side has a small triangle, EH, and a small cresent marking.

Is there a universal symbol for modified choke ?

Thanks'

"...Is there a universal symbol for modified choke?..." 'M' or 'Mod'. The markings you're seeing are standard Remington marks.
Not likely to be a modified choke with rifle sights. More likely to be IC. Should be stamped on the barrel. Might be stamped 'Imp cyl'.

This is a smooth bore barrel, but no clear markings as far as I can tell to the type of choke. I bought this 870 for $185 plus $35 S&H / FFL fees. It is in great shape. Cant wait to shoot it and start personalizing it for HD use and back up on pig hunts.

Thanks for the feedback

Good buy. Paid $210Cdn including taxes for a smooth bore, rifle sighted, Remington, barrel alone. And it was a good price. There is a very small and faint(any more faint or smaller and it'd be invisible) 'CYL' on it aft of the 12 Guage 2 3/4' or 3" stamp on the left side, though. Your's very likely has it too.
"...start personalizing it for HD..." Don't even think about a pistol grip only. You have no control whatsoever. The way it is, is optimum for fighting. Once you've sighted in.
Dry fire practice is good. So is bowling pin or plate shooting. Both are incredibly great fun.
Having the barrel ported isn't a bad idea though. Even if it does increase the noise. Reduces the felt recoil with slugs, considerably.
"...pig hunts..." Slugs.

How's this one? 1976 Wingmaster. Magnum (3" shell) receiver, but a 2 3/4" shell barrel. Marked 'Full,' but it's 18.5" long. No sights, not even a bead.

rkamp,

The barrel should be marked (stamped) with the choke on the left side of the chamber area, if it has a choke from the factory. Sometimes the stamp is very faint- you may have to use a flashlight shined on the barrel at an angle to see it.

I don't know of any 20" fixed MOD barrels Remington ever made, but that doesn't mean they never made any- it just means I don't know about them. I know they make 18.5" fixed MOD barrels with rifle sights- have you actually measured your barrel? Measure the INSIDE of the barrel to the bolt face of a closed bolt- make sure the gun is unloaded first of course.
