Pick up an early T/C Contender with a Super 14 .30-30 barrel on it. I plan on taking it to the range Friday and playing with it a bit before I take it deer hunting Saturday. So, how are the factory iron sights on these? Should I keep them or go straight for a scope and be done with it? I would try the iron sights first but, the time constraint isn't going to let that happen.

Thanks
Adam

I personally use scopes on my hunting pistols, but I'm sure you will do fine with regular sights.........

Takes a really skilled shooter to use open sightes at the distances a 30-30 can kill at. At least a red dot or scope and some adjustable shooting sticks will help in the field and 150yard shot can still be a challenge.

I have a Contender super 14" in 30-30. It is a great gun and I have a 4X on it. I deer hunt with it a lot. Taken quite a number of deer at various ranges.

My handloads, from the bench, when I am 'on', will do 3 shots into 7/8" at 100 yds. That is using my hunting load of 125 gr Nosler BT's.

I'm sure you can do quite well with the irons, but the distance the 30-30 is good for calls for glass to really make it shine.

Good luck with yours as they are a real hoot to shoot and to hunt with.

Thanks DW. I'll try the 170's and 180's I already have that I shoot out of my Marlin lever. If they prove to be too much, I'll definitely step down to the managed recoil loads.

Thanks
Adam

I don't have a .30 WCF barrel for my Contender. However, as for accuracy of T/C Contenders, I have a 14" bull barrel and 2X7 T/C scope in .223. 10-15 years ago, before age and diabetes affected my eye sight, I shut up several braggarts at the range. With good hand loads, my Contender is capable of bug holes at 100 yrds. Unfortunately, I no longer am.

My 14" 357 Herrett would go 1-1/4" at 100 yards with hunting loads.
And by 14" 218 Bee goes under an inch at that distance.

Well, I couldn't wait to get the scope on so I took a long lunch and had one mounted and bore sighted. I went with a Weaver Classic 4x28.
