I have 2 T/C hawken rifles. One is kinda old. Don't quote me by it, but i would say late 80's anyway . its a 50 cal. The other is a real nice mid 90's 45 cal.. I am wanting to bring them back out to Hog hunt with.

1st question: i was just reading that you can shoot sabots in these guns and suppose to be accurate. Has anyone Tried this in one of these guns? and if so how accurate are they?

2nd question: I was reading that these guns are tapped for a scope base. now i know a bunch of you will cringe at the thoughts of this. But let me tell you. I am having problems anymore , focusing with iron sights. Either my target blurrs out or my sights do. My eyes are getting kinda bad. Does anyone know what model of scope mount fits these things or where i can purchase one?

3rd question: are all the models of T/c hawken rifles tapped or is it just the new ones? i would hate to purchase a scope mount for one of these guns and it not work. I would really like to just do it to the older 50 cal. and leave the 45 cal alone and pass it down to my son when he gets old enough to hunt with me.

Any info would be great !!!!

I have 5 T/C Hawkens, ranging from 4 digit to 6 digit serial numbers; none are tapped for a scope.

There's a couple of suggestions in this linked thread about "no gunsmithing" scope mounts, but I don't personally know if they work. Maybe you can call the Iron Sighter company and ask them if the mount that angolabob is talking about will fit your gun or how well it works.

They make these little sighting discs that are said to work really good to help folks see their sights. It's made of cling plastic, and you put them on a glass lens and then when you see the hog that you want to shoot, you move the glasses down into position from the top of your head. That way the sighting disc is all set up so that you can see your sights.

And there's some new fiber optic sight sets for rifles that help to brighten up the sights too.
Even if did you put a scope on the Hawken, you might not like how the scope lifts your cheek way up off the stock because it often needs to be mounted high to clear the side hammer that's in the way.
You might be better off to consider buying an inexpensive rifle on close out that comes with a scope. These new fast twist rifles shoot sabots and conicals out to 100 yards or more. Then you will be hunting in hog heaven for years to come for only a modest amount of money.
Here's a nickel break action model for $199 plus $5 shipping:

And here's an even better one for $219 plus $5 shipping and they will both shoot sabots really great!

Don't let those hogs get away! :)

I have a 50 cal TC Hawken. If I remember corectly, it has a 1:48 twist barrel. It handles heavy / long miniballs very well. I have not tried saboted bullets.

A scoped Hawken would be a PITB because of my cleaning method. I remove the barrel and place the bottom portion of it in a bucket of hot soapy water. Don't think that would be good for a scope.

I can't tell you anything about the Hawken, but I might know something to help your vision when shooting.
I am 53 and the target started getting blurry enough at 100 and 200 yards that accuracy started to suffer. I started using a diopter that stick on my glasses with a suction cup. It makes the rear sigh, front sight and target all appear in focus.
If you want to try it without buying one you can get the same effect using a piece of tape with a hole poked in it. You will need to adjust it until you find where the hole needs to be on your lens.

i had found a lil more info on the scope mounts. Read that it uses the rear sight hole as one of the holes to mount the scope mount. seen some pics of it as well. man looks like it lifts the scope off the barrel about 3 inches. looks like it would be hard to get use to cause i would have to have my head lifted up off of the gun so high. kinda like see through mounts on a lever gun.may try some new fiber optic sights like articap suggested. may be able to get away with fiber optic sights out to 50 yards or so , if i can get my hands on some fine ones. Got some fibers on other guns that really are just to big in my opinion. If you were to lift up on a deer at 50 yards it would take up the whole shoulder and be hard to be reasonably accurate with a shot. i will get something figured out shortly. has anyone tried any of the T/C Fiber optic sights they got for a hawken rifle?

TC website shows mounts and scopes for their Hawken.

I understand your frustration with iron sights and old eyes at daybreak and sundown in the deer woods.

Good luck.

What about peep sights?

I don't think I'd want to use sabots in it. I don't see any advantage over a fat, heavy conical. The heavy conical will hit a hog like a ton of bricks.

You may want to try the Powerbelt bullets.

well i tried out the 45 cal powerbelts HP's today. went down the barrel about as easy as my cast conical . which was very surprising in a way. didn't need the bullet starter anyway. i could get it started real easy with the ramrod. U would actually be suprised. i was in a way. i took a box out to 50 yrds and made sure it was 50 with my range finder. i took my spray paint and painted a dot about as big as your fist/ baseball maybe. ( if that big) and took out my bags and shot off a table. first few shots were bad. lol my fault , man i forgot how sensitive those triggers are once you use the set trigger. ( love it by the way) once i got my bearings though. those actually shot pretty good. i was getting about a 3 inch group at 50 yrds. now take into consideration for me, that front sight would take up that whole dot on the box thats as big as your fist, due to things fuzzing out for me. shot to the right about 2 inches though. i shot my conicals that i had a guy make me about 100 of and they shot about the same as powerbelts, roughly 3 inches. with 80 grains of goex granular. the conicals were dead on as it can get for me. I don't know maybe i am making a mountain out of a mole hill and just wanting to try something ( different with an old rifle) i will say this about them. I dug the powerbelts out of a piece of 6x6 thats behind the box and they were deformed real bad, ( which i expected) but they didn't expand. The conicals actually mushroomed a lil and seemed to penetrate a lil deeper. I think the powerbelts may actually need just a lil more gas behind them to make them perform better . maybe 90 to 100 gr+ all and all they shot as good as a conical and didn't break apart for those interested. anyone got an idea on some Finer sights on the market? that would easily swap out on my old T/C hawken? i am at a 50/50 stand still here. 1: i could stick with sights that i can see, but be kinda limited on my range due to eye sight , or possibly try a set of finer sights that may / may not be harder to see , but extend my range just a lil.
