I used the Surefire unit. Crazy bright light, long engaging switches on both sides that can be covered so you have exposed for light and not exposed so you don't do it accidentally. The fit was a bit snug, but easy fixed and installed.

i personaly would never put a light on my hd shotgun
the main atvantage you have is the criminal does not know where u are in your house....if you mount a maglight under your barrel you cover is blown
i know it looks kool on tv seeing the swat team on CSI run in with AR-15's that look like something the swiss army knife company would make
but think about it do you want the crook knowing where u are?

Hehehehehe, ever heard of muzzle flash? If you’re in my house and you see my gun, light or no light it’s too late for you.

The Tacstar is made in the USA, and a low cost alternative to the surefire's. I see them on e-bay very cheap at times. I like the heavy duty mount, I bought a second mount to support my extended tube. The flashlight it's self is as nice as my Surefire 6P.

cratebuilder - thanks, I may go with the tacstar.

I think it is a good idea to be able to positively ID a target before you starting blasting away.

Choate makes this forend. Looks like they have a short version too, since Mossberg uses two different lengths of tubes on the action slide assembly. I found that out putting a Surefire on a 500 but I was able to get the other length tube from Brownells.

You God damned right I do! One, I am not going to assassinate anyone. I will make 100% sure they know I am home and I am armed and they have exactly 3 seconds to leave or they could die. There is NOTHING wrong with letting a burglar run away rather than shoot him down in cold blood in the dark. That is murder!

It has ZERO to do with TV or CSI or any other not real life BS - in real life, decision are made for different reasons than does it look cool. Well when you are my age any way. If someone kicks down my front door while I am sitting on the couch - I start shooting. that is a completely different scenario that than someone stealthily breaking in late at night and the 4 dogs not already freaking out. How then would I know if it is a BG or maybe - onloy maybe - how do I know it is not some local teenager looking for $20 and a bottle of booze or the 20 something across the street that has ended up passed out in my front yard more than once?

I am not about to kill either one of those kids and shooting them in the dark takes their whole life away. In fact if I see it is one of those scenarios, the shotgun goes away without them ever seeing it. Even though I am armed, I have the ability to talk to someone. Why would I not do that without just giving them a chance to leave? Castle Doctrine does not give me the moral right to kill anyone I want. It simply recognizes that I have the right to do so if necessary.

If I hear someone in the house at night, you had better believe I will be turning on every light I can and making all the noise I can to scare anyone away before I have to use deadly force. See for me, i'ts not about the right to kill someone. It's about NOT killing someone. I already have a plan. I know where I will be and they won't know exactly other than it's on the second floor and they are on the first floor. I can already be on the phone with 911 and me and my loved ones are in a defensible position. Why? Because I have made it so!

"Via con Dios @sshole" is a perfectly acceptable alternative to 'Hello 911? There is a dead guy in my living room... send the cops and an ambulance'. I don't EVER want to have to make that call unless that is THE last resort.

Man... am I the only one that thinks killing someone is not the FIRST alternative???:cuss:

Well put Markbo. Sometimes the testosterone in these forums really frightens me. It's almost as if some folks are just itching for the opportunity. None of you ever, ever want it. Believe me.

Markbo, its simple if you don't want to get shot don't break in to peoples houses in the middle of the night, you go right ahead and give the CRIMINAL the upper hand if you want its your family not mine.i hope no one on this forum or anybody else for that matter ever has fire there weapon in self defense.i'm not trigger happy, think what you want its your opion.

I'm with you on this one Markbo. Would I fire as a last resort? I don't know. I like to think I could. AS A LAST RESORT. I am under the impression that your average home invasion or break in is not done by determined, well equipped, veterans of the criminal variety. If some punk or two breaks into my home looking for something cheap to score some blow or what not, they can freaking have it. I can replace property. If me getting up, making noise, and turning all of the lights on scares them out of my home, then I have done my job. If, on the otherhand they choose to approach the noise and come down a narrow hall (that would be lit) that leaves them no cover, and ignore my warnings? That is when bad things happen.

I don't want to shoot anyone. For any reason. Maybe one day, I might have to. I, like most of the other fine posters here pray it never comes to that.

/sorry for the rant.

000buckshot, there have been at least 3 threads in the last few weeks where someone shot and killed a family member assuming they were an intruder. While you may be ok with the prospect of shooting a family member, most of us would rather identify the target before pulling the trigger.

You also don't seem to understand the use of a light on a HD gun. Contrary to popular opinion, you don't flick on the light and run around the house looking for the intruder creating a spectacular lightshow along the way. There's a reason these have switches that are mounted where one can use them with their hands in position.

jorg ya'll prob got the wrong idea about me
i know my wifes voice i know my step sons voice i would ask if if was them
i don't have a huge house,i don't have an upstairs i don't have the luxury of having all my family upstairs it would be nice but i don't.our bedroom is on one side of the main bathroom step sons is on the outher no long hallway
so what light do i flick on to scare them away?run into the livingroom and hope not to bump into them criminal on the way and flick the light on
i'm sorry get pissed off if you like i realy could care less but in the great state of south carolina if a criminal breaks into your house with you inside is does not matter if he is armed or not you have the right to defend your family/home/i guess i should ask "hey buddy you armed"i'm sure he would tell the truth
i've never laid a hand on a person in my life no fights no nouthing
well one time but i had no choice in the matter he was drunk swinging a pool stick at me
with that aside, I AM NO BLOOD THURSTY MONSTER

This thread was not intended to start a discussion about ethics/safety.

I asked for advice/recommendations on tac lights.

Please keep it civil so it does not get locked.

Definately agree with you there. I would use the shotgun light to not only let him know I'm there, but it would blind the attacker incase he tried attacking me, then I can very easily turn it off so he doesn't know where I am. The last thing I would ever want to do is kill somebody, and I will do anything I can to stop that from happening.

I've also noticed Tacstar is very inexpensive, I was looking for one for my own HD shotgun, but found that the surefire lights are way out of my price range when they come with the mounting equipment. Tacstar is the way I will probably go.

One other thing I picked up in the Tacstar photo. I am not a fan of slings on shotguns inside a house. One you won't be slinging one over your shoulder and two they can get in the way. I originally had one on mine and after a very short time practicing & moving with it, I removed it.

I bought a TacStar mount and a TacStar switch (replaces the flashlight tailcap). I wasn't impressed with either. The mount is passable, but not great. The switch was completely unreliable.

I've got a SureFire now. I'm considering the SureFire mount for it. Is there another good one?

This is like the one I use:
