I'm casually looking for a flashlight that will mount easily on a Picatinny rail. Most lights I've seen are sold seperate from their mounts, so I can get almost any light given the right mount. Suggestions? I'd prefer the mount to keep the light high on the frame, and apart from that my main considerations are value (lumens/life to cost) and color (black mount and light). This'll be mounted on a stainless Ruger P95PR.

I have a light from Insight Tech Gear address: http://www.insightlights.com/products.htm

I have their model M3 and am pleased with it. I use it on different pistols and like it alot. It is not real heavy and controls are reachable and quick. When considering a light I wanted to make sure it was a type that is switchable from one pistol to another. This light does not require any changing of parts from gun to gun it just slides on the rail. It is very bright and seems to be a very sturdy, solidly built light. Switching from full time on to using it switching on/off intermitantly is very easily done with your finger. It fits and has many accessories to use on long guns also and has accessories that give many options. I have fired 500 + rounds in my 45acp with the light on and the light is as solid as the day I bought it. And the price seemed reasonable. It makes a great light for my 'Armadillo Hunts' late at night!

Just remember this safety issue. When using this light mounted you are pointing a weapon where ever the light shines. For this reason care must be used as I am sure you wouldn't want to be looking for an armadillo or other varmit with the light and someone or something comes aroound the corner and you have them in the sights and finger on the trigger. Surprised, you flinch and it is too late you have killed the neighbors dog. This is one of the big issues with weapon mounted lights. What you see stands in front of the muzzle.

Good luck and safety is the word.

Be aware that some of these lights can run $200 or more.

I think the standard Streamlight M3 is a great light for $100 or less.

my experience

I have a Streamlight M3 (light) as well as a Streamlight M6 (laser/light) and they are both durable and easy to use. I use them on both a Glock 17 and shotgun - Mossy 500 and an 870. No hiccups.

I also have an XML from Springfield for my XD - works fine, I just do not have that many rounds using it.

I went through this a while back with all the hoo-haa over LED's. I personally tested them in the store, in a dark backroom. I mounted one of the little XML on my XD40 compact and an M3X for anything else. I found that for a very small light, the XML is quite bright at short range and the M3X is brighter than the highly touted Streamlight TLR-1 WeaponLight AND it has great beam adjustability.

i have a m6 light/laser combo and it has been great on many various handguns and has performed nicely, i have even done some low light trainning with it, i really couldn't be more happy and the fact that it didn't cost me a dime makes it even better.
