i'm researching tac lights for a glock 35 and a h&k usp (full size).

i've found the tac3166 for the glock, as well as the insight m2 for the usp to be safe choices, meaning they fit and work.

i also ran across various surefire and streamlight options. the reason i'm hesitant to go with any of those is that it appears not all tac lights fit on every gun with a rail, sometimes requiring an adapter, making things more expensive and bulky.

specifically, the rails on the usp are closed at the front, meaning you cannot mount a tac light that slides on, only one that clamps on. on the glock the rail is open in the front but even though a light may slide on properly it can not lock correctly.

could i get some input please on what are good tac lights that are known to work with either one (or both) of these guns without mods or adapters? thanx much!

There are basically three kinds of rails.
1. "universal," which obviously isn't. That's the most common kind - Glocks, Berettas, most 1911s, etc. Some of these rails are not made very well and the sizes vary slightly. Glocks are pretty reliable as to the rail. This type of rail is indeed open at the front, as you describe, but has one slot on the bottom which locks the light in place.
Almost all lights meant for pistols now have this kind of rail.

2. Picatinny, such as you have on the tops of many firearms.

3. the H & K. They decided they had to have their own. I think newer models have gone to the "universal" style of rail.

You are right that you are going to have trouble finding something to fit both an H & K and a Glock. The new LED weapons light from SureFire (X200) has an adaptor for two types of rail, and I think I have read that they are coming out with another adaptor for the H & K kind of rail. G & G makes an adaptor that goes on permanently that takes you from what call a "dovetail" (picatinny, etc.) to a universal.

I have an Insight M3, which after long struggles to find appropriate adaptors I now can mount on my shotgun, AR, and Glock 17.
