I have a buddy that has recently gotten into shooting with me. We shoot action pistol and also do some 1-500 yd shooting with my Rem700. Just recently the guy has gone all out and bought a nice rifle, very high end stock, $1k scope (all great stuff) but is proceeding to buy a bunch of accessories that are pretty dumb, but "look cool" like extra picatinny rails on the fore end of the stock for lasers and stuff. I remember watching a video on youtube that showed some guy making fun of people who overdo the tactical bit and I think it would drive the point home well, but I cannot find it in the search feature. Anyone have any suggestions or know where to find the video I might be talking about?

Second what Inebriated said. He's an adult who can spend his money on what he wants. Just keep shooting, and showing him how to shoot well. Eventually he will decide which accessories make him a better shooter and which are a waste of money.

Generally speaking, showing backhanded videos to your friend that are meant to make them look foolish is not a way to handle a friendship.

Just flat out ask him, "Why'd you put that on there?" If he can't give you a good reason, point that out to him. What do you wanna bet it's not there the next time you go shoot?

Either that or shoot his gun, and comment on the weight. Then grab your stick..."Wow, this is a lot lighter." Problem solved.

:neener:And you arent mine!

Lol, I guess you got me there. My point is, though, if he likes it, more power to him. If his tastes in firearms become more a tad more functional, then that's even better.

My brother likes to point out that he spent way less on his used ex-NMSP Colt H-BAR than I did on my bought new Ruger Mini-14. Then I get to explain to him that he has spent more money jazzing up his H-BAR than I did buying my Mini-14. He put a collapsible stock, a monolithic railed forearm that free-floated the barrel, a Harris bi-pod, a flashlight, a green laser, and a range-finding scope with a ballistic reticle on it. It shoots tiny groups at stupid ranges, but it weighs about 15 pounds empty. I put a Weaver K2.5 on my Mini-14 (recently replaced with an open red-dot sight) and called it good. I shoot about 1½ to 2½ groups at 100 yards and don't need wheels to get to the firing line. He shoots his at the range for bragging rights, and I carry mine in the patrol car to keep me alive in the event something goes horribly wrong.

So, he's happy, and I'm happy.

Haha, its called the law of noncontradiction ;) I do know what you mean, but I would rather have a shooting buddy who didn't look like a goober because he picks stuff that "looks so cool" but has no purpose. I have discussions all of the time with my wife over fashion v. function, so I guess it is something that is hardwired in me :)

If you argue with a woman about fashion v function, you may have the constitution to sway your friend.

That said, let him have fun. Who cares if he looks like a goober? If he is a safe and competent shooting buddy, he's already better than half the guys at the range who will look down on him for his rig.

I once argued with a female about fashion... I'd rather shoot with the goober.

If one of my shooting buddies decided to show me a video with the point of making me look stupid, in an attempt to control how I spend my money; he would no longer be my friend.

Friends don't let friends treat them like children.

Do your friends tell you what kind of clothes to buy? They may give their opinions, but in the end, the choice is yours. Same thing applies here.

don't say a word, just enjoying know how much cooler you are than him.

Like I always hang out with fat bald guys...

Its just a phase a lot of us go through. If you are really his friend don't try to help him get over it. His gun, his money. Now if he starts wearing his baseball caps backwards----

He'll get over it.... hopefully. If not, you'll have material to rip on him with for a long time, which should give you some comfort :p

I'd rather just go shooting with my friends than arguing about equipment. A weekend of shooting will teach a person more about their firearms and accessories than six months research on the internet

god forbid people buy stuff for their guns simply because they enjoy it!......i mean, could you imagine the horror if people actually had FUN with their stuff!!!.......its almost too terrible to think.

Enjoy (probably not the video you wanted but... oh well)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_PItzGsmas

It is very well done and brings a smile to my face. YMMV

Share it with your friend and have a laugh or two then go shoot some more.

Me own thoughts? (like it matters) K.I.S.S. and prefer to spend money on ammo.

Thanks! The first person to actually answer my question :)
Not the video I saw originally but, along the same lines.

@mistwolf there is never any arguing. We have been good friends for 20 yrs now, since we were kids. Just joking and friendly badgering.

@ChCx im not telling him what to buy, but what not to buy. To follow your clothing idea, would you be embarrassed to hang out with your friend if they started to wear "homie" bandannas, white "wifebeater" tanktops and the really baggy Dickies pants?

Telling him what to buy or what not to buy ultimately is the same thing.
And no, if they were a friend I would not be embarrased.

You know the difference between a fudd and a mall ninja? I don't either. But at least the mall ninja in this case seems to be more to hang around with.

I too don't judge my friends by their material things. If you are embarrassed by what your friend wears or what kind of gun he shoots, I suggest you move on till you find someone else, more like you, who is more concerned about material things, than what a real friendship is all about.

I see nothing wrong with it. Am I wrong for having extra rails on my HD 12ga or my hunting rifle to mount my flashlight, my scope or red dot, and (if needed) a laser, bipod, foregrip, or simply because I like the way it looks better than the original handguard?

Rails aren't just for mall ninjas anymore ;)

*Edit to add: There are no rails on the 1911 I carry every day :D

Because many of us are trying to tell you to leave your friend alone. He's entitled to his opinions and preferences. If he wanted your opinion on what he "should" like, he'd ask.

Now where's that youtube video link with the guy complaining that his friend is an opinionated *BEEP*....that should drive the point home :neener:
