Tacti-Cool Friend Help

Because many of us are trying to tell you to leave your friend alone. He's entitled to his opinions and preferences. If he wanted your opinion on what he "should" like, he'd ask.

Now where's that youtube video link with the guy complaining that his friend is an opinionated *BEEP*....that should drive the point home :neener:
And who is the opinionated guy telling me to leave my friend alone?!? You telling me to leave my buddy alone is the same thing as me telling him to leave the laser off his thousand yard rig. In both cases a person is telling someone else what to do! The only difference is that I have asked my buddy why he wants some of the crap that he wants, not told him that he is not to buy this or that.

I too don't judge my friends by their material things. If you are embarrassed by what your friend wears or what kind of gun he shoots, I suggest you move on till you find someone else, more like you, who is more concerned about material things, than what a real friendship is all about.
This is becoming rediculous. People are reading waaaay too much into this thread. No, I will not put my friendship in jeopardy because my buddy wants to add certain things to his rifle. I was just looking for a funny way to show him what the "I like it cuz its cool" thinking will lead to.

Meh, when it comes to stuff like that no more than occasional playful ribbing at his tacticool accessories is about as far as you should go with it... if he realizes he looks goofy then good, if not then you have your own personal jester at the range.

...@mistwolf there is never any arguing. We have been good friends for 20 yrs now, since we were kids. Just joking and friendly badgering...

I getcha. I figured he was a good pal or you'd just shake your head and move on. What I was trying to say without going into a lengthy explanation, actually shooting with the rifle and gear in question will teach more about it's usefulness than simply talking about it and shooting is much more fun than talking about it on the internet

Also, how do you know that he's not just trying to get into a different shooting style than you? The stuff you would take on a deer hunt might not be the same stuff you'd take to a Magpul carbine class. Similarly, the rifle and pistol you would use in Cowboy Action would not be the same as a tactical class.

Gear does not make one a "mall ninja". It's not knowing how to use it that makes you a poser. If you bought a molle vest and let it sit in you closet, or put it on to goof around at the range, you might be a mall ninja. Of course, being an adult, you're free to have fun how you want as long as it's safe. But if you took that vest to a tactical carbine class and actually learned how to use it for magazine changes and such, would you still be a mall ninja then?

I find it odd that we have people who spend thousands of dollars on civil war muskets and clothing for reenacting, or on lever action carbines and SAAs to go to Cowboy Action shoots, and all of that is seen as perfectly fine and dandy. But when an adult has more fun spending their money on modern military gear, as opposed to 1860's military gear, he's considered a moron.

OP, if your buddy bought a Henry Repeater and a SAA would you try to dissuade him? If he bought a civil war uniform, mess kit, grew a mustache and joined a Reenacting outfit, would you consider him foolish?

Or would he just be an adult spending his money on interests that are different than yours?

*I have an Army buddy who has probably sunk close to $20,000 in WWII guns and gear. He has a complete 82nd Airborne outfit with weapons, as well as an SS uniform (he's not a skinhead, just a history buff). He takes part in WWII reenacting a few times a year. I on the other hand don't own a single firearm that has a wooden part. And yet, we get along fine. I don't tell him not to spend thousands of dollars on WWII stuff or wood stock guns from the 40's, even though they don't appeal to me in the least. He's an adult and can spend his money on the things he likes. And he can do it without getting attitude from me about what I think is better.

Ragnar, have I hit a nerve with you or something? Please read your own signature line, because I haven't told my friend what to get, or given him any attitude. I was just trying to find a funny way to help a funny guy see that he might not have a priority list that made the most sense.

Sheesh, how does a guy close a thread?

FTFY.

Whether something "makes sense" is inherently a matter of opinion since "sense" is something that happens in your mind. Therefor it can only make sense or not make sense from your point of view. And your point of view cannot be the same as his. To try to change another person's physical behavior based on your personal likes or dislikes is not very friendly. It's also not very logical.

I will ask ask again. And I really am asking. If your buddy bought a Henry Repeater and a SAA would you try to dissuade him? If he bought a civil war uniform, mess kit, grew a mustache and joined a Reenacting outfit, would you consider him foolish?

If he made personal choices that were more in line with what you like, would you then be less willing to try to to modify his behavior?
